send your old MIJ snares here!

These two Star snare drums have sold in the last 2 weeks (not mine). The red one for $190USD and the satin flame one for $130USD. It's strange as these drums don't normally achieve these sorts of prices here - usually in the $50 - 75 range. Both were in good shape although I'm not sure that the Satin flame one had a badge.

Keep in mind, due to the size of the market, we don't see many of these.

We're definitely seeing the "snowball" effect with MIJ snare drum prices on the rise! Are they worth it? Only a small percentage truly deserve to sell for over $100, but the majority should be selling for $50 or less. The problem I see is that once one drum sells for a high price, other sellers pick up on this and feel their MIJ snare drums should command high prices as well. Personally, I've stopped collecting MIJ snare drums due to these high prices... unless I stumble onto that one nice drum that sells for what it's really worth. I look forward to input from others here, with their feelings on the subject!

IMO, these snare drums were bought to complete a kit. Most mij sets have cob snares so i can see where these might get more. That wont make them sound any better, but it will complete the kit.

I think you are correct with this assumption! The other reason these may have sold for higher prices the color of the wrap. The vast majority of MIJ snare drums were sparkle finishes... very common. Thanks for your input!

Agreed......the buyers had the REST of the kit and knew they'd have to wait maybe years to find the matching snare, so it was worth it to them to go that high. I'd probably do the same thing.

You are 100% correct! Only rare wraps deserve these outrageous prices!

you guys could be right about someone having the matching kit but there were 2 bidders on the red one and I've not come across a kit in that colour here. A lot of these snares were sold seperately with a stand and sticks (definitely the case with the red one). I think it may have been bought because it looked good. It was in very good condition with original batter head. I actually have the same drum with the old swingstar badge.

I really like the old MIJ kits but IMO the snares just don't cut it in the real world. Nice to have to complete the kit though.

I am guilty of paying what I thought was a lot for a MIJ snare. But, as stated, I had the rest of the kit!

And from what I understand, my Star Fantasia kit is not that common. but I could be wrong...I even remember discussion as to whether a matching snare even existed. So when I saw it on ebay, after years of obsessive searching, thinking I'd never find one, I said, "That's my snare."

My max bid was $175, but it only took $105 to win it...well worth it.

It came in great shape, too. I stripped it and cleaned it. I reworked the bearing edges and lacquered the interior with four thin coats. I fitted a standard Remo bottom snare head and an Aquarian Studio X on top. It had the original wires on it still, and my intention was to switch to some PureSounds, but when I put the originals back on in the meantime, I got a killer sound! I'm afraid I'll never get it back if i switch them out. Also gives a great rim shot, which I love to use...think Walk, Don't Run intro...

This was my first lacquer job and I think it really does work. It now has such a great pop...My intention is to do the 13' and 16" toms as well, but use Granitone in the bass drum. Problem is, right now the whole kit is sounding so good all around, I'm afraid to mess with anything!
