As you had seen in another recent thread, I was wondering aloud what non-vintage kits that were roadworthy I should buy. Some say to get brand A, some say to get vintage, some say used.
Went into Banjo Center this afternoon, and what did I come upon? An old Made in Japan Tama Rockstar kit!!! The best part? I got a five piece kit (four toms and a kick) with new batter heads (minus kick, as I had a kick head) for all of $140!!!!
Yeah, the kick is missing two lugs on the reso side and a hoop, but otherwise it's all there!!! I can recover it, or turn it into the Pictures of Bunnies kit (prolly not), play it out, not cry if someone spills beer on it, and not worry about my vintage kits getting banged about. And it was not very costly!!!
I just put heads on, and she's punchy!!! I can't tune it as low as I'd like, but I can handle this kit's sound. The drums have a nice sound and some punchiness. The kick is pretty conventional (22x16"), but the rack is a 12x11", and the "floor toms" (rack) are 13x12" and 14x13". They will be easy to haul in a Nissan Versa. It also came with an 10x10" rack, but it is now trade or Flea bay bait...
Thanks again for all of the advice!!!!
I will post pix on the blog soon.
