For the money, you can't go wrong with the Catalina series. They show up all the time in your range. I have played them and they sound very good. One potential problem might be adding matching drums down the road. There have been many colors in short runs. It will be difficult to add-on.
IMO, Gretsch and Yamaha make the best low-mid range sets.

What configuration are you looking for? I've got a Gretsch Renown Silver Slate Sparkle kit that's going to go up for sale soon. Sizes are 22x20 bass, 16x16 floor, 12x9 mounted & 14x6.5 snare...and the finish is lacquer not a wrap. I've had them 4 years & only set them up 3 times, never gigged & kept in bags (included) in a smoke free environment. Looks like a brand new kit, not even any rash on the BD hoops. I'm wanting more for them than you're talking about here, but we could make a bundle deal with the other stuff we had talked about. Only issue would be shipping...these drums are heavy! Do you have a Greyhound station near you?

Yeah, I thought about it after I submitted that last post...I knew once you saw them that they wouldn't ever enter a club. I really hate to sell them but being 5'6" and having 2 back surgeries made me switch to a 20" Bass. It's a beautiful kit, but it's been sitting in bags in my loft for 3 years.
You might want to check out the Sonor lower end kits, I had a 3005 kit that sounded great!...the Gretsch Catalina's are really hard to beat though.
If you want something to catch on fire, I've got a MIJ TKO kit that really needs to go up in flames! LOL!
My recommendation is to get a set with shells of some degree of quality...i.e. Maple or birch...stay away from boxwood or luan mahogany. These low end kits don't stand up well to gigging or any kind of hard usage. They also don't tune well, nor stay in tune. I speak from expirience...a bad one with Mapex.
