La Boz Drums

Check out yet another MIJ brand I hadn't heard of until now:

http://www.ebay.com/itm/VINTAGE-60S-BOZ-PEARL-5-PIECE-DRUM-SET-JAPAN-22-12-13-16-W-MATCHING-SNARE-/220861140680?pt=Vintgae_Drums_Percussion&hash=item336c598ec8

I dig the baseball bat cymbal holder on the bass drum (at least I assume that's what it is). Is it a clip mount with something that slides underneath it? It almost looks like it's raised off the shell a little bit. I also like the unique strainer.

I also like the solid color natural wood hoops. Hadn't seen those on a MIJ kit before. This guy lives about 20 minutes away from me. Should I pull the trigger? Kind of a cool kit, and I'm sure it will look sweet with some TLC.

A nice kit, made by Pearl I believe (they did the Slingerland knock-off lugs & hoops) and if they can clean up nice, certainly worth $300. Note that the bass drum hoops are not original to the kit, they would have been either chromed metal, or chromed metal with an inlay (I don't think Pearl or Hoshino used the US-type black hoop with an inlay.) Probably not hard to find suitable metal replacements though.

Disagree about the $300. I think thats high. The most I'd pay would be $250.

Is it a "nice" set? Yes, I suppose so.

Not to start a fight, but this is an early LaBoz, made by Star. Look at the Slingerland exact copy of the Sound King single snare lugs. That is the key to knowing your way around the stencil market, knowing your parts. Pearl picked up the contract after Star informed all of it's stencil distributors that they would be stepping out of the stencil business to re-cast themselves as TAMA. At the time this kit was made, it was a St. Louis Music Supply "name brand", I belive. It could have been a Brooklyn Music Supply name, but it is highly unlikely as they dealt mostly with Pearl. There was also another big supplier in San Antonio. It seems to me they dealt with both Star and Pearl and Cooper's Music in L.A. dealt exclusively with Pearl, owning somewhere around 20 "name brand" badges. Mikey knew Mr. Cooper and can tell the story about them. I know more about SLMS as I live in the Midwest and see mostly their stuff.

Sorry jonnistix, to contradict you, but I don't think that this is a Star drumkit.

Neither have I seen such a snare strainer in any of the Star catalogue pages nor the rhombic shaped tom mount for the rack tom at any Star's.

My reference (you know that, for sure):

I know from Star only that rectangular type of a bracket (see pic below).

I believe that 'La Boz' was made by Pearl.

In the early days of Star, LaBoz was indeed one of Brooklyn Music's names brands. They did move to Pearl, but it was around 68-69. That tom mount plate is the same as on my Majestic kit. Pearl's Slingerland copy snare lugs were not the same as Star's, they were shorter and were not an exact copy like the Star version. The Pearl version was fatter and did not have the same ridge on top, it was more curved, the ridge on top of the Star is straighter. If you look closely at the Star lugs, even Slingerland experts have a tough time telling tem apart, until held in hand. The only way I can tell them apart is by weight, the original Slingerland lugs are about twice the weight.

Look closely at the side of the copper coloured drums and you will see the same tom mount. Early tom plates were this shape, not the later diamond shape.

Interesting to discuss with you again, jonnistix Yes Sir

Concerning the lugs I'm off - I don't know the exact shape like you do.

I'm focussed at the bracket, snare strainer and rail consolette, only.

The bracket you mean with the copper set is the later one from Star (also being used at the very first Tama's), with the hatchment-like mount at the shell. They used this type of bracket only with the 'Free-o-matic' tom holder, which first came up around 1972 (not earlier! - The Tama catalogue pages are defintely wrong here).

I also have my doubts that the LaBoz rail consolette type is a Star-like one.

Star used two different types (acc. to my best knowledge: only those two).

Maybe the LaBoz is a mix done at the time, when some of the hardware parts were still/ no longer existing at Star, but being switched over to Pearl's?
