Sonorus kit (made in Belgium)

Hi,

Here some pictures of my most recent project.

It's a 1970s' Sonorus kit, made in Belgium Europe.

The sizes are: BD 22"X14", FT 16"X16", TT 14"X8" and TT 13"X8".

I'm not sure but looks to be 3-ply birch.

Bass and floor have reinforcement rings, Toms don't.

Sounds is not bad at all, new heads would improve it I believe.

Most interesting,...

- Floor tom has 9 lugs?! (never seen that,...)

- Ludwig copy lugs.

- Rogers swivo-type bass drum legs

Can somebody help me with the name of the wrap?

Thanks.

Stef

Stedi, that kit is in amazing condition! The chrome is perfect, from what we can see in the photos, and the wrap is in great shape! This is one fine looking set of drums! Although I cannot give you the name of the colour of the wrap, it is sweet!

Hi Stef,

My Sonor Phonic and Phonic Plus 18" floor toms have 9 lugs as well. I don't think that Sonor (made in Germany) and the Sonorus (Belgium) brand are connected, however.

That's a really sweet kit! Nice restore.

It seems Sonorus 'borrowed' ideas from other manufacturers all over...

Gorgeous kit though. That wrap looks 'kind of' like a Ruby Strata. But just kind of, not the same.

My 1977 Phonics have 9 lugs on the 16" and that wrap also looks like one of two marble finnishes from Sonor 60`s era !! ( Wine marble and red marble )

It`s a drum,.....Hit It !!

Wow,... lots of info already,.. thanks guys.

The finish looks to be Wine Marble indeed!

I found a few pictures, ... thanks OddBall !

So the 9 lugs isn't that rare after all,... good to know.

I don't believe however that Sonor had a lot to do with Sonorus.

In the mean time I contacted a person In Brussels who took over the name "Sonorus" and continued the business. Apparently he's the guy who has all the details. Waiting for an answer from him. There is a website but it's all in Dutch or French. www.sonorus.be

The chrome is indeed in very nice condition. In all, the kit just needed a good polish. It came with new Gibraltar hardware, a Yamaha pedal and some low-entry cymbals.

That is one cool kit! It appears that they copied parts from some of the best companies available at the time! I dig those "rogers-style" bass drum legs!

I had an Orange kit, made by Capelle in France.

The 18" also had 9 lugs, and was missing its hoop. Capelle, then still in business, had a new one made for me at a very reasonable price.

The kit is for sale again - not from me, from its next owner - at a very reasonable price if anybody in Europe are interested.

Apparently a continental whim to make floortoms with 9 lugs - makes positioning of the legs tidier....
