I've heard you and others laud the merits of copper before. I really need to check one out. I honestly don't think I've ever played a copper shell snare drum. Which ones/models do you recommend, John? Next time I go to the drum shop I'll hunt one down and give it a listen.John

If I'am not mistaken the Ludwig Brass and Bronze snare drums are primarily made of Copper alloy and so you've been playing copper all along if you have a Black Beauty. Hoppy did the PMI testing of the metal alloys in even the Ludalloy shells and I'am sure he would repost the results if anyone is interested.

Not really. The copper is microns thick and only used as a covalent-bond bridge between the nickel and chromium. Of course, we all know by now that aluminum and plating doesn't mix. :(

Now, if you have a BRASS Supra, which is copper/zinc, then you've heard the "warming" effects of copper. Bronze even moreso. Copper is dry and warm at the same time, almost wood-like in character.

What copper drums can I recommend? The one that got me started was/is the Pearl Marvin "Smitty" Smith 4 x 14. The one I've been using since last year, to rave reviews by people I've worked for is a SlingYo 6-1/2" x 14" that I purchased NOS of eBay. When they were new, they were practically giving them away, but I paid $180. Right now on eBay, there's a Pearl and also a Yamaha copper. There's also a Peace hammered copper which I've played and it too is great. To tell you the truth, I haven't played a copper snare drum yet that I haven't liked. I've been trying to get Ludwig to bite on a copper Supra, which I KNOW would be tremendous, with the added bonus that plating would require only one step, that is, IF it were plated.

Yes Really! I'am not referring to the bond bridges or the plating but the shell composition itself! > Blk.Bty.= 64%/31%/4.72% Cu/Ni/Zn Bronze= 88.74%/10.21% Cu/Zn

JR and John, I totally agree re the copper shells. I think it is a very overlooked material. I think dw might do a copper shell snare. I have a very simple copper shelled drum that Arnie Lang built and it is an amazing drum.

Please feel free to post a photo of Arnie's creation. I'd love to see it! I'm sure others would too. Excited
