WFL bass drum hoops

Hey all-

Long-time lurker, first-time poster. I really appreciate that this community exists and I just think you all are a great bunch of folks!

I am in the process of doing a resto on a 1958 WFL bass drum. When I acquired the drum, there were two kinds of hoops on it: a painted wooden hoop on the reso side, and a metal hoop with a central groove on the batter side.

The drum was less than original condition when I bought it, so the way I figure it, the hoops were either metal, or wood, but not both, or maybe neither.

Any help you could provide would be appreciated. Thanks!

the metal one is most definetly not factory, the wood one I would need to see the entire rim to tell if it's factory.

I don't think either one of those hoops is original WFL. All the bass drums right down to the low-end club date kits all had an inlay strip. Even if the strips were missing, if the wood hoop was original, there would be a center channel for a strip of wrap.

Right on Purdie, neither one of the hoops in the photo is original.

John, that's incorrect not all bass drums came with inlay. the wfl bass drum I sold you is 100% original and no inlay. I've seen many that didn't have inlay in them.

Mark, Both those kits have bd hoops with inlays. Maybe you scanned the wrong page/kit. (?) I'm with 55' I've only seen plain hoops on older stuff too. What year is the bass drum I got from you? Because of the Zephyr lugs I automatically assumed it was 40's/early 50's. I don't think WFL was using zephyrs on drums as late as 58.' (which would include plain hoop bd's.) Am I wrong on that?

From vintagemore2000

take a look at the link. no inlay. this is the 1957 catalog. http://www.vintagedrumguide.com/images/ludwig_sets/1957-ludwig-drum-sets-2.jpg

Looks like the Dance Outfit does not have inlays but the Deluxe Combo does to these old eyes?

Mark knows his stuff, I'll take him at his word. It's just hard to tell from those Ludwig catalog pix. It is easier to see the hoops on the Deluxe.

Are we talking about a single/center-lug drum here? No hi-jack intended, but does anyone know when/what year Ludwig discontinued using the zephyr lugs?

Interesting discussion on what I thought was an innocuous question! Eye Ball (I love the passion around drums that I read on this forum.)

Back to the OP: Since it has become apparent that these are not the proper hoops, where can I order a set of reproductions or find factory hoops?

I have a pair of hoops with a gold inlay, but I'm not sure what size they are. What size is your drum? I'll check the hoop sizes tomorrow.
