Shaft hi hats Last viewed: 4 hours ago

[ame=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LmeM2l4F7DE]Well look at that...[/ame]

Pretty silly "live" video, but those hats must at least be 15's, possibly even 17 or 18's (!), though it's hard to tell with the fish-eye lens.

Oh, and it's Isaac Hayes, not Curtis Mayfield -- Shaft, not Superfly!

Gotta love the mimed videos.

I wouldn't pay much mind to what the video portrays for hi hats. With all the variables that could be in play (microphones, EQ, compression, etc.), the drummer could have played anything from Cambers to old K Zildjian top and Paiste 602 bottom. I am certain that in many cases, the drummers record with whatever is in the studio and the sound can be tweaked. I have to say if I were sampling hi hats, that's a sound I would love to have!!!

This reminds me of when I would see Peter Criss playing fibreglass Pearl concert tom kits on videos and then found out later he mainly recorded with Slingerlands.

Studio trickery and miming aside, it does look like an actual studio session, and maybe even for Shaft. I doubt they would've had everyone in studio set up and mic'ed up just for some promo video...seems more likely that the session was the priority and the video an afterthought.

No, they wouldn't have had everyone mic'd up just for a promo video. I can see that. But in the two-hand hi hat section (in the intro), you were seeing one hand with rim clicks. They kept going back to one guy who was playing the same passage one-handed on the trumpet. Just sayin'...

Remember that you can easily assemble a video "session band" consisting of extras and other musicians who could have been working on something else five minutes before. Studios typically had entire session orchestras before the synth age. Synths pretty well killed the session orchestra.

But- 15" or 16" hi hats could have EASILY been used in the recording of that song. And I would LOVE to have samples of those hats in my library.

Hi Evan,

Yes, Isaac Hayes, not Curtis Mayfield. I must been having a brain ****! But I'm pretty sure that's the video I was thinking about. Thanks for finding it!

I use a set of 16" A Zildjians as my main gigging hi hat cymbals and the ones in the video look to be about that size or maybe 17".

My hi hats are a lighter early 70's (hollow logo) on the top and a heavier 60s on the bottom. I love them!

I play 70's 15" New Beats, and I have to say it's hard to go back down to 14's after you use bigger ones. I'd love to try some 16's or 17's someday!
