help identifying old pearl drums

WOW! Another one!

First: I take it your folks forgave you... :)

Second: WOW! Great one! Okay, I gotta ask, how much? (yeah, I know... '79 and in Canadian funds, so it'll be hard for us southern cousins to grasp the amount)

Third: WOW!

Sweet kit!

Can't believe I've been coming back here every few hours, and only just now noticed that the discussion had moved on to a second page.

Click! OH!

I've been writing to the owner of Vintage Drums in Portland, as well, and he had this to say about Pan/Pearl--

Pan was a stencil brand that wasn't limited to Canada as I've seen them in the US as well. They are nearly identical in all aspects to the Pearl President series. The lugs on yours indicate it was made in the late 60's or perhaps very early 70's. The shells are Phenolic Resin, or Bakelite, currently used to make motherboards. Great drums, very resonant- the Phenolic shells are unaffected by weather and generally will stay round for a lifetime.

I'm afraid my parents never did understand. Worse, I made my little brother buy a bass guitar with his savings and tried to whip us into a rhythm section. The Partridge Family never had anything to worry about.

Will galoshes be enough? My wellies are somewhere in the basement ...

Flip:

I generally do not like the "Root Beer" finish, but your drums look pretty darn nice!!

Just get rid of that boom stand, and put your ride on a nice old fashioned straight stand and you'll be fine....:)

You asked me how much. $189. No tax, because they were used. Are there stores that still do that? Tax back then was 7%. Had exactly $200 in the bank. Thirty dollars more than my brother, whose bass was $99 plus tax. How do I recall? Got $100 from Uncle Aub for being born, then ten dollars each year for our birthdays. Into the bank. Don't think he ever sent us anymore after he found what we finally spent it on. But that's Uncle Aub, for you.

The set was without cymbals. My favorite album as a teen to drum along to was the Peter Gabriel melting face one, because there aren't any cymbals. Eventually bought some cheap hi hats to go with the stand, then a crash/ride. Then got into Neil Peart and so bought a glockenspiel. Kept asking for cowbells for Christmas. Seemed to always need more ... Dammit! Somebody should've made a Christopher Walken smiley by now! Excited

Recently, I brought the set up to date. E-Mad bass head, Cobra pedal, Gibraltor stands and a stool, a set of Sabian B8s, and those Sound Off pads, because I live in a condo. The total? Oh, bit more than a thousand bucks.

And the bass? Guess who's got that now, too?

Believe me, I agree with your about the boom stand. It's because of the size of the carpet and the placement of our furniture. If my father-in-law had struck the back of his head on my Rock/Ride one more time ...

There are two holes in the bass drum for a cymbal mount, but neither of the music stores I went to could help me find anything in my size. And don't get me started about shipping prices to Canada for bizarre instrument parts.

The color is Tiger's Eye, according to Pearl's 1968 catalog. Call it root beer one more time, and I'll have to open a can whup a-- on you. Root beer flavored whup a--! Cool Dude

By far, the sweetest badge I've ever seen.

I paused about the damper knob, which I know only from Star (this type was called: 'One touch damper control' by Star).

A copy, made by Pearl - or did someone add this practical accessory to the shell lateron?

Okay, so you have a 'Father in Law' proof cymbal stand... I can go with that.

Ahhh... $189.00, the good old days!

Take a look at these pictures, you can go to my site (link in my sig) for more pix. This is Pearl's Tiger Eye wrap. Yours looks a bit more brown-ish maybe? It could also just be the lighting in your condo.

My shells are standard crap wood Pearl shells. Not the spiffy ones like yours!
