Leedy Broadway Dual

Hi guys,

I'm more a 1960's Ludwig guy, I don't know a thing about Leedy snares.

What do we have here ?

The ad says:

1920 - 1940.

Leedy Broadway Dual.

Looking great to me but would like to know how they would sound and what they're worth in this condition.

Thanks

Thanks for the info.

Just contacted the seller, I'm going to have a look at the drum tomorrow.

Anything in particular I should pay attention to.

Again,.. these are my first steps into Leedy or any 20's or 30's drum.

Does the snare looks genuine and complete?

Thanks for the help guys.

Regards

You would be the only one on your block to have one, so I'd buy it. Looks complete and in good shape.

Hi Stedi, How much are they asking? I have the exact same drum.

These were available from 1933-36 when they were discontinued so

you drum is early 30's/ Made in the same factory as Ludwig & Ludwig

so the shell is effectively the same as a 30's Black Beauty or super Ludwig.

Heavy one piece brass with soldered back edges.

My drum has the top mechanism missing, I modded some puresound wires

to fit it and it now sounds and plays awesome. Here's the link to that thread

Check for the top and bottom wires, if missing deduct at least 250.00 as they impossible to find (I have the repros for the top wires at 125.00 mike@curottodrums.com and Bill Wanser wanserpb@aol.com does the bottom wires)...check for extra holes and non-factory mods...be sure the tension rods are all there as I think those are the 10-24 threads that are smaller (and harder to find) than the regular tension rods...good luck.

Hi guys,

Here's the Leedy I picked up this afternoon in Gent Belgium.

For its age the drum looks OK I believe.

The mechanisms seem to be working although on the batter-side the snares are missing and a few screws doesn't seem to be there. Also the lever of the batter-snare throw off is missing.

A lot more pictures here:

As mentioned earlier, I don't know anything about Leedy snares so all info is welcome.

In all honesty, I'm not really convinced if I'm the right person to take on a project like this so for the moment I'll keep all options open.

Restore it, sell it, trade it, play it as it is,...

As said, I'm more into 1960's Ludwig so if somebody has something to trade, all suggestions will be considered.

Most interested in:

- 1960's BDP Jazz Fest.

PM me,... but if it goes, I would love to see it going to a good home, preferably a VDF enthusiast.

Thanks for the info Mike.

The tension rods are indeed the smaller ones.

One is a bit bent and although they look rough, they're all there.

I opened up the drum and both mechanisms are working fine. On the batter side they're seem to be missing 1 long bolt. (see pictures)

Muffler working smooth.

Rims and hoop seem perfectly round.

Top-snares missing and bottom snares are Ludwigs.

1 lever missing.

The shell has a few minor scratches and dents but nothing really bad. I'm convinced that once cleaned, it will look spectacular.

I'm far from a specialist but in my opinion, for an 80 year old instrument, it's in great shape.

Hi,

I believe I figured out what seems to be missing from the batter side snare mechanism. A long screw and knob like the one on the muffler. I took the one from the muffler and it seems to be working fine. (see pictures). It could be that the spring is a bit to long.

Next question of course, who could help me with that ?

The more I study this snare, the more I get infatuated by it and the idea that I must restore it. It would be a dying shame to have owed this 1930's piece of American engineering without having heard and played it.

I'll start a new thread in the restoring section soon but I would need all the help I can get on this one.

So far what seems to be missing:

- 1 lever.

- Bolt + knob + spring.

- Top & bottom snare wires. (the bottoms ones are Ludwig but need to be replaced I believe)

Mike and Supraphonic, thanks for the advice on the snare-wires.

Which heads would sound best and/or most authentic ?

I can imagine that the double snares would ask for a specific approach.

All input highly appreciated !
