I`m Floored!! - Hello MIJ Specialists

Here, I have a 14 x 14 MIJ floor tom that I acquired awhile ago with a Stewart kit...It has no badge and is a 3 ply with re-rings...Wrap is in excellent condition with hardly any scratches or marks...It had very used white plastic heads on both sides with Raven embossed on them...

Here are my questions:

1. Is this FT a Star or Pearl stencil? I`m leaning towards Star but I`d like to be sure...

2. The inner screws/flat and lock washers/nuts look clean as a bean (see pic #4) Would they be original? I haven`t come across any MIJ`s with lock washers on the inside or the square nuts on the leg brackets...

3. Could this be a re-wrap? The wrap just seems super clean for it`s age...The vent hole looks as if it could have been tampered with at sometime...Possibly the reason for not having a badge!!

4. Has anyone seen this finish before on a MIJ stencil?

Any other info that you could share would be mostly appreciated...

As always, thank you gentlemen in advance...

My money says thats a re-wrap, For 2 reasons:

1) I havent seen many MIJ floor toms in that color.

2) No badge and you say it looks like the vent has been tampered with

You know what, you put some decent heads on that thing and its gonna sound fine. Nice catch!

It has no more or less value as a re-wrap or original. I say it an original wrap- they could have taken off the badge- I used to do stuff like that when I was 9 and 10 years old... Usually with a rewrap folks take time to slap a new head on there or polish the rims a little- and that blue diamond pearl was common enough in the day. Looks like exactly what it is and will play just fine in any basement or practice room for the next 25 years. She could use a new head it seems.

Grantro, Iam going to say its made by Star..Could have been an unbadge drum..If you could post a few close-ups of the grommet-air hole- and a close-up of the edge of the drum from the side i will be able to tell you if its a rewrap or not..I have seem that finish on other drums made by Star it B.D.P. I have had Star drums with the screws and washers like that on the lugs also the sq. nuts on the floor tom leg mounts..All screws/nuts are odd size metric threads.Oh i forgot to add if the wrap is Original one way to tell is.Is the wrap thin?...Mikey

Thanks so far for the replies gentlemen!!

Retro - I appreciate your opinion...I think it will sound great with new heads...I`m soon going to find out why Jonni loves these 3 plys so much!!

Osaka - I haven`t really seen the BDP before in MIJ...I`m in the process now of cleaning and polishing...I will post after pics...

Mikey - I will get those pics up for all to see a little later...I`m curious if you guys think it`s a re-wrap or not...

Cheers

Here's a pic of a mid-60's MIJ Crown 14x14 floor tom. This is the original wrap and OsakaBop is right...it was a fairly typical finish back then.

Here are some close up pics of the interior of the grommet and the edges of the wrap...

What do you think? Is it a re-wrap? I would say that the wrap is approx. 1/16" thick at the most...

Cheers

That gromett was removed and re-installed,..also the lap on the wrap doesn`t look machine assisted, could be re-wrapped !!

Yea could be,but im thinking it was done that way at the factory.Remember, some call it firewood for that reason.QC was not a big deal to them, back then.

Hit like you mean it!!

Yeah, Wayne's right. The attention to detail was less than stellar for those kinds of drums. That's an original wrap...I'd bet on it.
