17" Zildjian - What is it?

Loading...

I have a 17" Zildjian ride or crash/ride cymbal and some questions about it. It looks to have a misprinted stamp. Either that, or it was cut down from a larger cymbal. But the edge doesn't look like it's been messed with. What do you guys think? If it's a misprint, does that make is any more or less valuable? It's 1590 grams, pictures and a link to an audio file below:

Its a cut-down.

That was my first thought. It's too thick to sound good as a crash. The edge is nice and rounded, but it could have been cut a long time ago and worn down.

It is an expertly finished cut-down cymbal.

Logo is waaaaaay to far to the outside. Zilly changed locations for the logo stamp over the years, but NEVER that far out.

The fact that the Arabic signature is gone makes it look like it's DEFINITELY cut down. Could have been a 22" or even larger.

The bell is GIGANTIC for a crash!!!! I bet this is a good crash/ride...

Edit: listened to the sound sample- it's DAMNED nice!!!! Bell is way too big for the cymbal's size; but it has everything I would look for in a very washy ride!!!!

Good score!!!!

Yeah- I'm THAT guy!!!

Right. And that's a large stamp too. Large stamps were always impressed midway between the bell and the edge. So I figure that one it would once have beeen a 22".

You were trying to sell this thing on eBay just recently, correct?

I haven't put it on ebay yet. I just listed it on Chicago CL last night, there's a link to it in the for sale section. What do you guys think it's worth?

Do you mean that this is a 60's large stamp and not a 70's thin stamp? That would make sense, the others that it came with were 60's.

No true large stamps in the 60's. That's J.P. Trickster half-baked timeline theory.

Large stamps were made in the mid 1950's. Did you buy this cymbal off eBay, or where?

I came a huge ludwig kit that I bought. I'm parting out what I don't need. The seller didn't know much about it. She said that it belonged to her late ex husband, who bought it in the early 70's.
