Suggestions on finishing Natural Wood.

Loading...

I recently received a Leedy Utility snare that had a thin coat of water based paint on top. So I stripped the drum down using Citristrip to get back to the wood finish. Only problem is that it took off some of the original finish as well. So now I want to just get back to the completely bare wood and finish it as close to original as possible. What type of coating should I apply and how should I apply it ?

Picture A=Before Shot

Picture B=After Strip

Picture C-A random internet shot of a similar drum with a finish I am guessing mine was close to at one time.

Thanks,

Derek

Wow !!!!That looks too good to be true. So I would not have to get rid of the part of the drum that still has the little bit of original finish on it ? If so sign me up. Oh and would you put on a protective coat afterwards ?

This is what I used AFTER applying the Restor-A-Finish: http://www.howardproducts.com/feednwax.htm

Please keep in mind that just because this worked well for me it might not be the best method and/or product to use for your purpose. I'd wait to hear from some of the "experts" out there before actually getting started. They might even be able to weigh in on the "good and bad" of these particular products.

will do. Certainly reads like it would be good for what I am doing. I'll see what other suggestions come down the pipe also.

Thanks,

D

It's tough when someone molests a clear-finished drum. I ended up having to use Tru Oil on a Slingerland, as there was 5 freakin' bazillion coats of house paint on that drum!!!! It took me a WEEK to remove that gooey paint, and I couldn't save the original finish.

I wish you luck.

I've gotten great results with the Sam Maloof oil from Rockler. You wet-sand it into the shell starting with 320 grit then after drying repeat the process using finer grits.

This only had one really light coat of water-based paint. So it literally flew off as I was brushing the Citristrip on. Thought I did a miracle rescue until I looked closer and realized over half the original wood finish was gone. If you look closely at the left half of my second picture you can see the nicer wood finished section. I'll check into the Sam Maloof Oil as well. Any other suggestions out there ? Can't I just sand the rest of the wood finish off and put a couple coats of something on it that will bring out the wood and protect it ?

You can use an oil based polyurethane, it will protect it and give the mahogany a rich hue.
