How to Match Faded Blue Sparkle?

Loading...

Hey guys...if anyone has run into this situation and solved it , please let me know!!

I'm putting together an all Gretsch 1960s round badge set.

The Snare, bass drum and Floor tom are all 1960s Gretsch Blue Sparkle, which now has faded to a slight bluish-green. They have all faded pretty much evenly, so no problem there. Actually, you only notice the fading when you hold a piece of new Blue Sparkle wrap up to them..then you see the difference.

The problem is the mounted tom. It has no wrap, so I bought a nice piece of Blue Sparkle wrap from Precision Drum Company to re-wrap it.

The problem is the fade...the new piece of wrap looks different than the existing 1960s wrap. It looks more "blue".

So...what to do? Is there a way of fading the new piece of wrap? Or does anyone make a slightly faded Blue Sparkle wrap?

Any thoughts or suggestion, I'm all ears!!!

Thanks guys.

Place the wrap outside or in a window and let the sun do its thing to get some fade going. It'll never match perfectly (no matter what the solution) so I wouldn't let that bother me one bit... nobody will really notice other than eagle eye drummers.

Hoppy..thats, that is actually a great idea. Thank you.

And youre right, certainly in a club, no one would be able to tell. But if I get the new piece to fade just a little, so much the better.

If you want to experiment a little... the part of sunlight that degrades drum wrap is UV light. You might want to put the wrap under a UV light and monitor it carefully so you don't go too far over the other way. At least you won't take any chances of ruining the piece of wrap by baking it in the sun. They sell UV lights and fixtures at just about any Pet store that sells lizards and snakes. If you try it, please let us all know how it works out.

I've heard that sometimes you can ask on these forums and these big hearted guys will actually be willing to send you their old wrap for the cost of shipping. This is VERY BRITTLE stuff, but can be reapplied to your drums. This old wrap will likely match your faded color based on its own age. Of course you can pay for the matching for a minimum of $153 (for a whole 24x54 sheet)on drummaker and they will match your faded color. (Talk to Andy if you have the budget for new wrap)

Meanwhile: ATTENTION SAID BIG-HEARTED ENTHUSIASTS:

I am looking to wrap 2 drums and an inlay, but my Black Diamond Pearl (or Charcoal Pearl) is darkened and with child support and temporary unemployment (til school starts up again) I am on a tight squeaky budget. Are there anyone of you out there that would be willing to send me their old BDP or CP wrap. I am wrapping a 10x8, 14x5.5, and 1 inch DB inlay. I can send pics of my Pearl Import (DIXIE). Also looking for the BATTLESHIP lugs (and ideally the specific wrap) found on these from 1970-1972.

Thanks guys in advance.

Does this UV trick work to DARKEN wrap to match my old darkened wrap on my other drums? Have you done this before? This may be a huge breakthrough for me and my dilemma!
