Potsy - Nice clean-up on that one! That's a deep-dish Ludwig Pioneer (6-lugger). 3-ply mahogany with rock maple re-rings. The current market value on those is anywhere from, $125.00 to $225.00 or so depending on condition. If you find you're having trouble finding a buyer at, $250.00 a price drop will get it into the right price range and get it sold for you.

I love to tune those down low and 'splashy'... no better drum for second-line New Orleans stuff! Great old drum. I've owned about 6 of them and I'll buy the next nice one that comes up. They are a hard drum for me to pass up when I see one for sale. Tempting.

Purdie Shuffle PMed me about this snare possibly being a Ludwig Pioneer and not a WFL Supreme Concert Snare (he stated that a Supreme Concert Snare was an 8 lug snare), here was my reply regarding that:

Thanks for the suggestion, I want to make sure that I have the correct description for this snare. Looking again at the catalog, the "Supreme Concert Snare" on the bottom right of the page is a 6 lug drum with double flanged hoops, just like mine. It looks like what you are thinking of is the drum on the lower left, the "Contest Model Concert Drum". That one is an 8 lug with triple flanged hoops.

But the only Pioneer model snare drums that I can find that were made in this time period were made by Ludwig & Ludwig and had tube lugs. I can not find any record of any drum with a WFL badge being called a Pioneer.

My best guess is that Conn owned the Pioneer name along with the Ludwig & Ludwig name and WFL Drum Co could not use it at the time my snare was made. After 1955, when the Ludwig named was purchased back from Conn, the Pioneer name probably became property of WFL/Ludwig drums again. The catalogs on vintagedrumguide.com show no "Supreme Concert Snare Drums" after 1960 and no "Pioneer" snare drums before 1960 (at least not by WFL).

The fact that the "Supreme Concert Snare Drum" disappeared when the "Pioneer" snare drum showed up is further proof that the Supreme Concert later became the Pioneer, as I stated in the post. I realize that the catalogs listed on that site are not 100% complete. However, I can not think of any reason for a company to produce two identical snares at the same time with two different names.

If any of this does not sound correct to you, please let me know. I hope that I don't sound rude, I certainly don't mean to. I appreciate your input very much. I am pretty new to vintage drums, and I need all the help I can get.

If anyone else has any input on this, I would appreciate it. I am selling this drum and I want to make sure that I give a correct description.

nice find indeed. i have the same exact drum. it is one of my favorites. many people call these 6.5 pioneers. but at that time, they were supreme concert models,6 luggers. mine was also all original but with the top calf batter busted. mine is a keeper!

Hey mike, remember the one I sold last year? Shake, rattle and roll! I'm a sucker for deep-dish mahogany pioneers.
