Need to stretch this vintage Gretsch wrap

Loading...

When I took the hardware off this Gretsch snare, the wrap nearly fell off too. Based on suggestions from several members, I decided to attempt to repair the wrap, rather than replace it. My first step was to clean and remove the glue, which easily came off with water. I never removed the badge, but simply worked around it. It was necessary to scrape some of the remaining glue from the shell with a single blade razor.

I got back to working on it today and realized that the wrap has shrunk! Starting from the badge and working around the drum in both directions, the first set of wrap holes line up with the shell nicely. The second set are both about 1/8 off. Working to the last holes near the ends of the wrap I can't even see the shell hole through the wrap hole. The over-lap, which would normally be about 3/4 inch is roughly 1/4 inch, meaning that the wrap has shrunk roughly 1/2 inch in length. Using a hair dryer, I heated an 8" section for 15 minutes. The wrap was too hot to touch, but would not stretch. Any suggestions?

This is what i have done in the pass.If i understand your posting the wrap is still on the drum at the badge right? What you will need to do is put glue on the side of the shell were the side of the wrap first was on not the over-lap side put glue on the wrap then have someone hold the drum and pull the wrap tight as you re-put it on the shell do the same on the other piece of wrap...When Gretsch/Ludwig?roger's/ ete put wrap on the shells they used a pressure roller to press and pull the wrap tight on the shell you just need to do this with your hands and someone to help you...Mikey

Thanks- I'll give it a try. I can't imagine being able to stretch this stuff by hand. Here's what I tried this morning: To protect the wrap, I taped off a 2" section at one end with blue painters tape. Then, I suspended a 20 pound weight from the end of the wrap (with duct tape) and heated the entire length for about 10 minutes. The wrap didn't stretch even 1/16th of an inch. In fact, I think it's possible that applying heat caused the wrap to spring back to less than it's original length as it cooled. I'll try your suggestion, but if that doesn't work..... I'm gonna attempt to let it sit (without heat) with the 50 pound weight suspended off the end for the next 8 hours.

NASA likely tested this stuff on the original space shuttle.

Thanks

jim

you will not be able to stretch the wrap

I spent a bit more time attempting to stretch the wrap before seeing your post. First, I set a sheet of white paper under the wrap, then marked the location of all the lug holes. This gave several reference points to determine if anything was effective. Then, using duct tape at the end of the wrap, I again taped a heavy weight to the wrap. I also put a thick towel behind the wrap, to retain heat on the wrap. Heating it with a hair dryer for a LONG time along the entire length, I was able to stretch it a total of about 1/8 inch, which is all I need. However, the wrap recoiled to it's original length within seconds of removing the heat source, even with the 20+ pound weight still in place.

Somewhere in the middle of this ordeal, I became convinced that Gretsch wrap was developed by NASA for space travel. Proof attached.

Thanks

jim

Thats just too funny!! I dont care who you are, thats funnny. This may be sacreligious, but maybe you could just reem the holes out a little and the the lugs should cover the misalignment.

That's exactly what I did. I also filled a couple of cracks with a two part epoxy. I'll post pictures eventually. It actually looks reasonably good.
