WOW! How good are Slingerland snare drums...?!?

Hi! I'm kind of a newbie here, love the forum. Got to say that the knowledge you guys have is amazing. I tend to waffle, so I'll try and keep it short and SWEET. Which reminds me... Just wanted to let you know that I'm a very, very happy man. I received a Slingerland Artist snare yesterday. Man, this drum has FAR exceeded my expectations. I've had an old nickel (?) over brass 14 x 6.5 Carlton "King" snare (UK made, 1930/40's) for thirty odd years, (many of which the drum was stored in the loft), which has served me well, but MAN does the Slingy have tone. Beautiful condition for a drum older than I am. Love, love, love it! The only downer is that the guy I bought it from is gutted to sell - he really does seem sad to let this one go, and I can understand why. What a beaut...

I've tried to add some pics, hopefully it'll work.

Very cool snare. The good news is that's not a 60s Slingy snare. That's about a 73ish beauty. Those bearing edges will be a bit better formed and slightly sharper than the flatter rounded 60s version. So, while you may be bummed it's not a 60s snare, you should celebrate that it's a 70s. That's what's giving it that full round and sensitive warm sound with a nice crack. Love those snares. Wait till you get your hands on late 70s one ... woweezowee!

Any particular models from the late 70's that I should look out for in the future?

My favorite all-time snare is an early 80's 5-ply Magnum, 8x14 with 12 lugs.

It's between that and my solid 5x14 Radio King from the 50's. Slingerlands just "do it" for me. They have that "something". IMO, you can't do better. And, you see why Neil Peart played a 70's 3-ply Artist for something like 25 years.

Congratulations....and I really want to pick up one of those Artists.

Yes, I'd agree....and I'm basically a Gretsch player!!

Many years ago, I borrowed a friends set of early 70s Slingys in Blue Marine Pearl. I didnt like the toms that much, BUt the snare sound was EXACTLY what I had been looking for...crisp, clean, full bodied etc.

As much as I love my Gretschs, the snares dont sound as good as those early 70s Slingys.

Wow, a beauty.

Been looking for something like this, a woodie to go with my '80 WMP set for a long time.

I have 3 COB Slingy's, 5x14 Krupa Sound King, 5x14 TDR, 6-1/2x14 Spitfire, they all sound just great. Mark

I just got a 5.5x14, '63 Artist in WMP, single ply with 10 lugs. Have been gigging it. Sounds wonderful.
