Hi guys,

This beauty made it to Belgium today !

A 1966 Ludwig Super Classic, matching serials, all stamped 14 Feb 1966. Once fully cleaned and restored, this will become my studio rehearsal & player's kit.

Pro's.

-Matching serials: 296139,296288,298204, snare bought separately: 305168

-Pristine white interiors that never saw daylight before.

-Bearing edges in A+ condition

-No UV fading.

-Original heads on toms and bass drum !

Con's.

- Bass drum wrap damaged in right bottom. (probably exposed to heat)

- Floor tom wrap seam slightly lifting.

- Some pitting on snare drum.

- Inlay on 1 BD hoop slightly damaged.

- Wife and kids hate the BDP finish,... I love it !

In the mean time I ordered a 30 x 40 piece of BDP wrap but all tips & tricks are welcome on the wrap restoration.

Nice looking classy kit, but something tells me that if you ordered a 30X40 piece of BDP wrap then you plan on rewrapping this kit. If it were my kit, I wouldn’t rewrap it. I would just clean it up and repair the best that I could keeping it as close to original as possible.

In this case, the blemished original wrap, to me, is more valuable than a mint-looking rewrap job. The seam lifting can be repaired. Is the damaged wrap on the bass drum on the very bottom/underneath? If so, it would be in an inconspicuous location when set-up anyway.

I second this although I think a 30X40 piece would be too small to even do just the bass drum. As for the spot on the bass drum if its indeed on the bottom cut a chunk of wrap as close as you can to the hole size and patch it. If its on the bottom it will be extremely hard to notice plus it would protect the wood still.

Musicaldeath: Good point! I didn't even think about the size of the wrap. What caught my eye was the "ordered piece of BDP wrap" which threw a flag up in my mind.

30X40, that's in metric centimeters,.... (Europe remember,..)

I will definitely NOT re-wrap this one,...

What I will do is to try to make a clean cut in the BD wrap and replace it by a piece of that 30X40 centimeters new wrap.

AHHHH the metric system yeah didn't even think of it. As for your plan that sounds good to me.

Another beauty! Tell the wife and kids they are crazy...I love BDP finish...it might actually be my favorite! Hopefully I will see you at Cafe Cosmopolite next Monday! Set time is 2100hrs. In case you're wondering...I'll be the guy behind the drums...ha! I'll also be playing acoustic guitar for one set...so don't get alarmed if you don't see a drummer. Congrats on the new kit!

I'll be there Aaron,...

In the mean time I found out that the Cosmopolite was recently acquired by a guy I know quite well,... can you believe that ?

I might take some extra folks with me.

See ya Monday the 11th in beautiful Antwerp !

PS: BDP is indeed a gorgeous finish although it's far from colorful or flashy. Nevertheless, it has this classic and cool appearance,... that's why people would rather describe it as timeless or classy I suppose.

The cleaning and restoration is in full progress. I'll post some pictures in the section "Restoring Vintage Drums" soon.
