where to store drums?

Loading...

I have been considering consolidating all my drums into one room. Thing is my basement is always cool, dry , but very humid. Whereas my attic is also dry, but hot as all get out during the day. Where would you think storing wood stave snares and custom wrapped wood drums be best...cool and humid, or really hot and dry?

Neither. There is another alternative you have not explored.

Hot is no good. Cool is always best. Thing is, you can fix the humidity problem of your basement with a dehumidifier.

Neither?....Hmmmm..maybe you're onto something there Rogersling, I will consider other options. maybe I could schlepp all this stuff over to your house?

I seem to recall seeing guitar players put those green garden hose lookin things with a sponge inside filled with water to provide a little humidity inside their ax cases. Wouldn't humid be better than heat?

Sometimes there is no optional best to the two choices presented. For instance ... You can have the dog maul your leg or you can have the cat pee in your ear.

Get it?

Neither of your choices are healthy for your drums. There is another option that you haven't considered. You need to think on it a bit more in order to figure out what that might be.

Humidity will cause rust and corrosion to occur to the metal parts on the drums over time. Also, it causes havoc with the shell's wrap finish (if it is wrapped). Cool and dry is best (not cold, but cool). I personally would store in the basement ONLY if I had a dehumidifier running during the humid times of the year down there. The attic is just way too hot and will case numerous problems with wrap finishes, including cracking and splitting......as will extreme cold, you really need a temperature and humidity controlled environment to properly store your drums.

Drum room inside the house anyone? :D

O.K......so this is turning into more of a fox, the goose, and the grain, kinda riddle.

I think until the alternative answer comes to me I will start by getting the drums out of the sauna known as my attic, leave everything in the basement and start working on the wife about building an addition onto the house for a drum room. Really, it's the only thing that makes any sense....for the drums of course. For the drums. Did I say drums? I meant pocket books and shoes honey. For storage...you know.... a nice big walk in closet....for more shoes.

When I got my dad's Slingerland kit from his attic, and after a good cleaning to get the nicotine and all that off them, it was pretty much brand new looking. Bear in mind he had the same charcoal colored shingles on his roof that I lugged up the ladder when we built his house. It was roasting in the summer and freezing in the winter up there and I saw no ill effects on the drums. The wrap and seams are all super tight. The only rust was on two cymbal stands that I think were left out in the rain a few times after a drunken jam session on the neighbor's patio.....

Take this for what it is. An example of not having to baby a drum kit to have it last for decades. It was made by rugged Americans to be used by rowdy Americans in a time when everything was made to last!

have a wonderful evening
