1983 Tama Artstar Cordia refinishing

Loading...

This is my first post so be gentle. Im a drumaker/drummer/artist that recently purchased a fairly beat up 1983 Tama Artstar Cordia....13X12 tom, 16X22 kick missing a hoop and 16X16 floor tom. I want to restore it completely but know nothing on how to repair the cordia wood exterior to its original state. I havent gotten the drums yet (coming from Seattle) but there are many scratches on the surface. I know the outer and inner plies are cordia but if I strip and sand how will this affect refinishing? Also, is that a stain applied to the cordia wood? Any help would be fantastic! Thanks!

That is going to be a very difficult project. The cordia layer is very thin but thats only the beginning of the issues. I have a very large set of Cordia Artstars. To begin with there are actually 2 colors in the run that they did during the eighties. The first batch with the serial numbers that start 83 and 84 (and have the badge with block letters spelling ARTSTAR) have more of a very plain, just clear outer finish on the cordia. The later drums with the serial numbers that start 1360 (badge has italic ARTSTAR lettering) have a amber, metallicy type finish on top of the cordia. Any scratches on these drums go through the cordia layer. I don't know how you could repair that. You can't just sand it down without taking off the cordia veneer.

I know this is of no help but this is what you are up against.

Good luck.

Thanks! I feared this. Once I get them I will keep you posted. I like the Superstars of the early 80s but the Cordias r so cool and different. May have to come up w/another plan....
