1982 Tama Superstar Question

Loading...

I have two 24 x 16 bass drums. I've seen as small as 18" diameter by 14" (I think) which, I agree, I would much prefer in terms of overall kit height.

This is the higher end tom mount that I have on both of my BD's:

http://cgi.ebay.com/Tama-Superstar-Artstar-complete-BD-Double-Tom-Mount-/150617412808?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item23117f54c8

Its at $75, a little high, but that is because it comes with the matching piece that it sits in on the bass. You can probably pick one up for around $50.

This is the one that matches the tom holder stand...currently at $29.95:

http://cgi.ebay.com/Vintage-Tama-Double-Tom-Mount-Omni-Sphere-/120735662289?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item1c1c6800d1

For me personally, I would hold out for or go for the higher end mount...but, that is my preference! :)

Hope this helps.

Yes, that does help! I was looking around on ebay to see what they were going for a bit yesterday, and that isn't bad at all, especially compared to trying to get Gretsch or Ludwig parts! I think if I get another thing for drums in the near future my wife will explode, so I will have to make do for a little bit. Thanks for the info!

I know this may sound weird but Ihave Yamaha Recording customs but I prefer the sound of Tama Superstars early 80's. I know they are both made of birch wood but I always thought tone-wise, the Superstar the better sounding tom and kicks. I love my RC's. Don't get me wrong. I loved the old Superstars that Billy Cobham, Simon Phillips, and Neil Peart played. Especially Billy Cobham's sound when with Tama. The Warning album for those who can find it on cd has amazing tom sounds and his rolls are just like liquid water cascading from a waterfall. Just amazing. I have a signed Cobham 8x10 from one of his Tama clinics in like 1985. When i met him he was kind of a jerk but I was dumbstruck. He was such a huge influence on me. It amazes me how many drummers and other musicians have never heard of Bill Cobham.

LOVE Superstars -

My dream kit would be to find all jazz sizes in Aqua.

14 x 18 kick, 8 x 12 rack and a legged 14 x 14 floor.

Maybe a matching snare too, but I don't think Tama made their

Superstar snares with Aqua paint, unless it was special order.

Pinch me, I need to wake up!

At least once in a while you will see these sizes in natural finish

as I think Elvin Jones may have endorsed and used Tama for a short

period of time, but I would have to google that one...

Elvin did play them for a while. Yeah, I always liked the aqua finished SS too. My favorite would be a natural maple finish I think they called it super maple or something. I had a drummer friend who had a set of them and he took casual care of them and they always sounded awesome. He never changed the heads and his set was gigged a lot as he was a good drummer who sang. I always wanted his kit. It sounded really wonderful. Another guy I knew who hosted an open mic had a cherry wine finish set of SS and they sounded awesome too and he wasn't much of a drummer. His drums were warm and powerful. He had the bigger power toms and big floor toms. One of my good friends in middle school had a set of Imperialstars and they were awesome too. That old Tama stuff was built so strong and designed well. They still make good drums now but I think in the late 70's/early 80's they made some great drums that will be around a long time.

I agree, as far as these drums go. I was able to tune them up yesterday, and they are the best sounding drums I have owned. I have owned and played MANY different sets from different makers- most of them high end- and these sound the best to me. I wouldn't say they completely destroy all of the other brands, because most companies make great drums, in my opinion.

They still look great too! I need new heads for the bass drum, so I'm hoping it sounds as good as the toms once I get them. Sweet drums! Walking

Superstar bass drums are awesome. They appear to respond well to almost any head choice. I've had a Superstar kit since 1988, and in that time I've used Remo Black Dots, Evans Emads, and am currently happy with an Aquarian Super Kick I. I've always used an Ambassador logo head.

Tama made everything. There are Aqua snares out there. They are VERY rare.

There is a catalog that shows the Aqua snare but no mention is made in the listings. Here's a pic of one.
