Saw this for sale locally, not sure of the manufacturer. Doesn't appear to be any U.S brand's that I am familiar with. If anyone has any information that would be great!

Thanks

Hi! Pleased to meet you...

That looks like an MIJ kit. One of the MIJ experts will be around shortly I'm sure.

Oh, you know... I'll just bet that kick pedal is a Pearl. Hmmmm

Welcome! This kit is a Star built from likely the 60s. Star built many hundreds of thousands of kits in the 60s and 70s, and most were what we call "stencils". All basically the same, with maybe the lugs being different. Star had 3 different lug types. Pearl also sold stencil kits, and between them they controlled something in the neighborhood of 90% of the stencil market. These drums likely ad a badge at one time with any one of over 100 "brand names".

Actually, the floor tom and snare are Star, looks like the others are mid 70s Pearl stencils, not as desirable as the older Japanese stuff. The lugs are what tell me this, can you get some better pix?

Once they are worked over, they can sound pretty good. I do a lot of refurbishment of these Star and Pearl kits and have some "How To" vids on my youtube page. Wat sizes are they? I would like to see the interiors of at least the snare and bass, if you don't mind. That will tell me the era, the type pf shells and also the ply count. Are the cymbals included? Those could be well worth the asking price alone, depending on what they are.

Thanks for the reply! I do have a couple more pics of the floor and bass drum. They are definitely not 3 ply. Look more like 6 to me. I will post those later tonight. They seller is asking $150 for the kit with hi hats +stand (they looks like zildjian a's) older pearl bass pedal.

The gold drums are of different manufacture than the snare-look like MIT Pearl stencils with hex-rod mounts.Stick on any ol' name-it's bound to be right. An earlier post mentioned Continental, which would fit.CB 700,Powersonic,Royce,Whitehall-the list is endless.6 ply luan construction.

Can you post the rest of those pix?Jumping2J

The best part of this statement is ASKING. Offer him 75, and let him work you up. Go over there cash in pocket, try to find out how many calls or especially visits he has had, and how long they have been up for sale. If he shares that info, use it to your advantage.

I am a salesman and the more info I have, the more ammo I have and can figure out a way to use it to my advantage. If they have been for sale for a while, he likely will take the 75. Make sure you have all denominations of bills so you can only show 75. If there have been no actual faces, then you are at the absolute advantage because you are the only one that is showing REAL interest, not an email storm. I NEVER do the email storm if it is something I am fairly certain I can get at a bargain price because I am the first and possibly only face he has seen. I do not discuss any terms of buying until I am in front of the seller.

When you do the test drive, don't show all your chops. Remember, these are MIJ and MIT so likely the seller is devoid of tuning skills and the heads look shot (and the floor tom looks like a 2 ply, so will sound flat, more than likely) so they will sound like poo. Take your key and do a quick tune and play lightly, then whack 'em good, but don't let on that you are a vintage drum buff, unless he thinks he knows more about them than you, and then maybe let on that an internationally recognized expert or two on MIJ drums have already looked over what we can see and have blessed them for 75-100....I would trump him on the missing original wrap as your reason for the discounted offer. Let us know what the pies turn out to be.

And I wonder what purpose he thinks shots of the logos on the heads are going to accomplish...?

This is one of those people that is confused by the name of the heads and the name of the drums...offer him 50 bucks, tell him the missing wrap and mis-matched heads are going to cost you like 250 bucks to get them sounding good again....then let him try to justify that!
