This is a relatively early ribbed aluminum snare from Slingerland from the Black and Silver Niles badge era, in very good condition. I picked it up to use as a spare but am not sure I want to have as many snares as I now have. From the 46xxx number, I figure this drum dates around mid-to-late 1970, fairly early for a black and silver Niles badge. Also, this drum comes with the lug backing plates that are only found on some of this series snare. Chrome hardware and hoops are nearly perfect, no rust or pitting...not bad for a drum that is around 50 years old!

I have this same style snare but mine is early 80s I believe.
Same "ribbed" shell but I noticed my my muffle and airvent/badge are in different spots than yours.

Based on the number, this is a pretty early 70's snare..Not sure if there is a relationship between the lug reinforement plates and earlier snares, but mine has them.
As with many snares I am aware of, as the years went on and they made slight changes, they seemed (for no apparent reason Lame) to also change the placement of the badge/vent hole relative to placement of the strainer and muffler.
Another difference is the muffler for this snare is the single felt, while other Slingerland snares (maybe even older ones) used double felts (not positive on this, though).

I just picked up one of these in decent condition but not as nice as the one in the photo. It needs a little TLC. Anyone know how I should "clean" the ribbed aluminum shell?
