Nice job JR. I am doing the same thing with a snare and now I am convinced about the tape method.What was that slight buzz when you hit the tom? Was that you camera's mic?

I'm not sure what buzz you heard, I was in a small bedroom in a cornor by the dresser, sometimes hitting the drum will make things rattle, I'll make a better test later in the week, thanks.

I did a 6 1/2 X 14 Ludwig Pioneer a couple of years ago using Jammin's Gold Sparkle and tape. It was my first rewrap experience. It looked great, but after a couple of months the edge began to lift slightly. My two conclusions were that 1) I screwed up by not putting the edge under the lugs as you did...that should really help hold the edge down, and 2) I must not have adequately cleaned the surface before sticking it down. I thought I cleaned it enough and I clamped it for 24 hours, but it started to lift anyway...not badly, but enough to bother me. I removed the Gold Sparkle, cleaned up the original WMP that was still on the drum (in VG condition) and sold it. Keep us informed how the seam edge does after a couple of months.

Wait a minute, you put the new wrap over the old wrap? That's not going to work, I'm surpised you could get the heads on. I removed the original black cortex wrap and the applied the gold sparkle wrap. I will keep an eye on the seems and let you know how it holds, thanks.

The Ludwig 6 ply shells are great for the tape method. Those shells are so dang thick and stiff, it really wouldn't matter what you did to the outside of 'em. I rewrapped a Luddy 6 ply kit a few years ago via JamminSam. Came out sweet.

I personally steer away from only utilizing the tape method on the thinner, warmer, woodier shells that make up the vast majority of vintage drums, though. From my studies and tests, there was an appreciable difference in sound quality for some shells. As has already been mentioned, it really depends on the shell that's taking the wrap.

For what it's worth, yours came out cool. Good choice.

One question, why? The wmp wrap looked great on that snare.
