Ha ha ha. Nice one roger sling, I did one of those proper laughs when I read your reply. You know the ones, when you lose the use of your knees for a couple of seconds.
I'm sure if you asked JB himself he wouldn't have a clue.
I guess live it was what ever the cool Mic's that Touring engineers used in the 70's. I'm not sure how many Live engineers they had during their career, but each engineer will bring their idea of Mic specs. If you know your Mic's then you need to study Pic's and Video footage. There's loads on You Tube these day's.
Recorded I guess it was what ideal in the given studio/situation at the time. They Recorded him in all sorts of places from normal Studio's to the bottom of stair wells in Manor houses. Again the choice is down to the Producers/Studio inventory/what was handy at the time.
I'm sure you could get some kind of answer from a Sound Engineer/studio forum.
