Where to position the double tom mounting plate on my Gretsch New Classic 18X14 Bass

Loading...

For a Gretsch New Classic "Jazz" kit 18X14/18x8/12x8/and 14" floor tom.

I really want to do this in spite of all the Virgin Bass aficianados there are out there. Cymbal stand tom mounts simply do not work for me. They can never be positioned the same way twice, constantly bounce around and always tilt and sometimes fall as well as (the cym stands) being required to be put in awakward spaces taking up an inordinate amount of floor space. Patrons are also constantly bumping into the stands.

Hoping that is enough to quiet the "don't put a hole in the drum" crowd. Where should I position the mount? I have the "Jazz" kit with 10" & 12" toms. All my research seems to indicate that 9" from the batter head is the norm. Positive or negative feed back would really be appreciated along with appropriate sugestions about where to put the mounting plate and down tube..

Ok let me answer your question's with some question's, what brand and weight stand are you mounting your tom to? and why are you not able to mount it in the same place eachtime. from the sound of it these are super small dance clubs or dinner clubs your performing in? I'm a purist, but with that said this is a new kit and they are making them everday, buy your bass drum is not a cheapie and a very desirable size and unaltered is going to increase value wise, altered as you are intending will have a negative effect. have you tried a snare drum stand to mount your tom off of ? look forward to your replies?

Your drummers not much good is he!? What you need is someone that's as good as me. ! John Henry Bonham !!

If you are going to drill the kick I would use an already drilled kick as your diagram. Preferably one you have played before so you can say you were comfortable with that set up before you alter your drum. What type of hardware are you planning on using? DW? Yamaha? Just curious. As a Gretsch New Classic owner myself I am intrigued and I wish you luck. The only reason I can figure Gretsch does not offer a kick with tom holder is because the NC series is made overseas. How do you like the sound of yours? Mine are the Nitron Glass finish drums but I wanted the Natural Satin finish. Oh well, I got mine at a great price so I am not complaining. How is the 18" kick? My 22" has power to spare. Good luck. Let us know how it turns out.

I'm curious about the sizes you listed. What drum is 18x8? One of those woofers or whatever?

Never, ever, ever, forever-never (thank you Patrick Star) drill a drum (just my opinion). Play 4-piece and use a snare stand for the left-hand tom. This way, you can put the ride cymbal in the right spot.

As far as those pesky patrons bumping into your stands, perhaps the stands can be electrified? Rude!!

Good luck with your solution.

Chuck,

I have a bop-size Gretsch kit (14x18, 8x12 & 14x14) and the Gibraltar supplied single tom 'Gretsch' bass mount. The distance from the front bearing edge to the center of the 1" post is 5-1/4 inches.

Like you, I HATE toms mounted on cymbal stands for all the same reasons, not to mention carting around the heavier hardware that's required.

I'll assume that you've already considered the option of a dual-tom floor stand instead of drilling the bass drum.

Gretsch lists the bass mount tom holders (single and dual) in their catalog. I'm sure you can find it via Google.

Hope this info helps.
