Packing Ludwig lugs

Did Ludwig put felt in the lugs like Slingerland did? I am getting a rattling sound from the 9x13 from my super classic, stripped it down and the only place it could be is from a lug.

Thanks in advance for the info!

That's a great question, and I think anyone who has experience removing annoying vibrational noise from vintage drums should hopefully chime in. Most Ludwig lugs I find have the springs and the inserts in them. That's it.

the larger Ludwig lugs (bowtie style that are on the floor tom and kick drums) were packed with the spring being wrapped with a 1.5" wide piece of masking tape wrapped around thick enough to be held in place by the side of the lug.

Thanks for the responses.

These are the large classic lugs and they too just have the springs and inserts. I think I may have figured it out, I think the muffler was installed wrong. It must have been removed at one time, I checked my acrolite to see how that one was installed and copied it. It would not stay up in a medium position. I am going to put this back together and hope for the best!

I have to polish the lugs so if anybody knows for sure please post it.

I've also seen sort of a thin piece of foam wrapped around the spring to cushion it against the inside of the lug casing to prevent rattling as well.

The lugs on my 70's kit have felt piece in the lug, but not wrapped around the spring. My matching Pioneer snare uses two separate foam pieces under the spring. Hope this helps.

I cut a piece of felt from an old bass drum strip and wrapped the spring, big difference!

Thanks for all the info.

Ok, now it's happening! This drum finally sounds fantastic! I thought at first that maybe I got a bad one but now it is full and deep and very resonant, hard to believe that a small piece of felt would do the trick. Now I guess I have to detail and pack the brothers.

Does no one pack lugs with cotton anymore? I did that with my Gretsch and my Ludwig vintage kits. I read about that in Modern Drummer when I was a kid.
