First restoration...a family heirloom...60's Ludwigs

Loading...

Well, here's my first true restore attempt...this set's been in my family since it was bought new in the late 60's...I finally got it off my oldest brother who had it stored in his garage for the last 20 years. Both bass drums have dates of June 7th 1968 on them...just 9 days after I was born :) So I kinda feel this kit was meant for me Cool Dude

I'm a complete novice...and it looks like it's going to take some work...I just hope it's all repairable. I've already looked up some posts (and a youtube video) on fixing the splits in the bearing edges...so I may give that a try myself. The lugs look OK...pretty hazy but not too corroded...the rods and hoops may be useless. I'm going to try cleaning them (at least a sample) with some CLR...maybe some steel wool....before I give up on them and replace. The wrap seems awfully faded but it's tight so I'm going to clean it up good and see what it's like. I'm more concerned with the structural integrity and playability than I am about the finish...it's silver sparkle...looking a bit more like a champagne at this point :)

The set is 12,13,16,22,24...2 different size bass drums...keystone badges...anyone have any idea what year's catalog I might find this configuration in...and what it may have been called? It looks like the '71 catalog (I think that's which one it was) had a similar set called the Rock Duo? But that one had 2 bass drums the same size...

a few more pics coming...

Congratulations on this fine kit. I have a strong suspicion that it was originally a 22,12,13,16 setup and someone added the bass on the date of purchase.

I'm curious ... can you confirm if it's the lighting ... are those innards mahogany???

The last pics are on the 22 bass drum...looks like a bubble of sorts that only hits the inner ply...still no idea what I'll do with that...but I'll get there :) The drums (one or two of them) have some roundness issues too...I'm hoping heads will fit good as from the little research I've done on out of round shells it appears there's not much to be done to get them right :( Hopefully there some secrets...or a craftsman...that I'm still unaware of :) I'm in Upstate NY...I'll need a good drum builder/repair guy to get the bearing edges done as well...I know Precision Drums is not too too far from here...

Well..there it is...wish me luck! Keep on Pl

Thanks!! Oh...on the config...I see what you mean...odd that they would have the same manufacture date...perhaps they came in off the assy. line together...? The inner ply... I don't think so...under all that dirt it looks lighter...perhaps maple...? The lighting is pretty miserable...

Thanks for the info & comments!!

Good stuff......

get the mold out of the BD first.......

you should be able to take paper towels and wipe most off..........

I'll bet the BD wood hoops are warped too........run your hand around them, and see if you feel dips and valleys.....if so......not good!

Take all the metal parts off all drums.......you have LOTS of cleaning to do....!

Will do!

And you are so very right...but with the sentimental value of this set (as a child I spent hours and hours watching my older bros play on it) it'll be a labor of love :)

Thanks!!

all right!

You've got some work ahead of you, but I have a good feeling about this.

Stay organized as you disassemble them, try to make a container for each drums hardware so you can keep it all together and not have a huge mess when you're done.

I had the same "funk" on my drums when I started. A warm solution of pinesol and water, some scrub brushes and an old wash rag will do wonders. Just DONT use to much fluid, damp to almost dry is what you're looking for,

Watch out for the steel wool on the chrome, you can knock the shine outta it real quick. I used the same pinesol solution to scrub it all up as well.

Start with one drum, one of the better ones and do it first, work slow and take your time. Drum by drum you'll get more comfy with the process and by the time you get to the bad ones, you'll feel right at home.

Following with interest, best wishes!

once the brass ceases to glitter, and the drum looses its luster, and the stage remains dark, all you have left is the timbre of family.
