Crest Deluxe BDP 4 piece - early MIJ

UPDATE: So I finally had a chance to pop off the head on the snare drum. Pretty interesting situation inside.

First of all, the badge is nailed on. The nails go all the way through the shell. The t-rods/swivelnuts look to have the standard thread pattern, they aren't like the thinner metric thread pattern found on Star t-rods.

I popped a lug off while I was at it and was very impressed. The chrome on the interior of the lug was in fantastic, basically perfect, shape. This was especially surprising given that every metal part on the inside of the drum was completely covered in rust. The lug was made with a pretty substantial metal - much better than Star's pot metal, and possibly better than what Pearl used as well. This is making me re-consider my position that this set could have been made by Pearl.

The shell itself is a pretty thin 3 ply, but it doesn't look like the kind of luan found in early Pearl and Star drum interiors. The color of this interior is much lighter.

And, of course, the 'fix' for the very badly damaged edges - some kind of scrap metal reinforcement bars. I dont know if they actually work, but it was an interesting idea. I dont know if this damage was sustained by the drum having a great fall, ala Humpty Dumpty, or if it was the result of being over tensioned, but either way, I'm at a total loss on what to do about it. To be honest, my first notion was just to clean the thing up as well as I can and let it be a decoration. Then I momentarily considered stripping the parts, but that seems wrong. My feeling is that any attempt to repair the shell might not only be a failure, but damage it even further.

Interesting pics either way:

So it's an 8 lug, find a shell with bad or no wrap, set up for 8 lugs, and strip the wrap and all the other parts and make drum. That shell is toast and not worth a dime. Too bad, as that looks to have been a nice piece at one time. That is precisely what I would do, but then I know it make yer eye twitch to do it that way...but hey, you know I'd do it in a New York minute.

1/ Best way - agree with Jonni.

2/ If not, that another way is:

a). Make a forming template on fragment external drum's dia from cutted piece of 2"-plank;

b). The second template - on internal dia.

c). Apply carefully an epoxy+wood meal mix

d). Clench a damaged part of shell between templates by clamps (protect surfaces with PE-film piece or silicone application on templates).

Many years ago I had repair by such a way a few shells for the guys who not wished to change the shell in whole.

Lucky restoring,

George.

Hey cn679 - What ever happened to this snare drum? You ever get it repaired? Read this thread as part of a BDP search - and it really has me wondering!

I had a great day! Instead of sleeping in and wasting the day, I got up at 8 and I had all my slacking done by noon!

From OsakaBop

The lugs look more to be from the Teisco drum company to me- that snare strainer -I have the identical one (same lugs as well) on a Dau (Del Ray)- those were all manufactured by Teisco. The Teisco shells were weak, thin and used very dry luan- I bet the snare caved in simply due to lug stress over the years. Still, a very nice find! A great piece for restoringFYI

Is the Snare in pic a "Dau"?

Or something else?

I had a Crest. Long time ago. ROP.

thanks sa
