Old Star brand snare

Wow! Tommy, you sure have some beautiful drums! I wish I could send you some of my charcoal diamond Supremes and my turquoise sparkle Stars but, this old computer doesn't seem to want to comply. When I bought my extra blue sparkle Star (the one like your ginger ale model), it was sealed in an air- tight plastic wrap! It is immaculate! I bought it for the extra lugs but, it is too good to start disassembling it.If you ever want to talk about Stars, send me a line. Thanks.

Tommy : I forgot to mention that the lugs on your ginger ale snare and on my blue sparkle Star are identical to the lugs on my Supreme snare. You definitely have a very cool early Star snare drum!

Tommy- this one is even earlier than the red sparkle kit, possibly 61-63. Those lugs are the same as some very early Pearl lugs as I believe Star, in it's infancy, bought some parts from Pearl. The only other explanation/theory is there was an independent foundry supplying both in the early days. Great find! Hope it sounds half as good as it looks!

Ralph,

Below are some links to pics and descriptions of a couple of nice (older) "Star" / Pre-Tama snares in my collection.

Here's a beautifully restored Gen 1 King Beat ...

Here's a nice rare 10 lug Kings Stone "Stencil" drum ...

From Ralf

Hello,Dear STAR-friends around here: I'm not sure, but something in it gives me the feeling that this (champagne sparkle) snare should be one of the absolutely earliest snare drums around here, that are produced by STAR ...Stunning great find!RalfNB: concerning the red one: I've never seen such lugs at a STAR snare drum before.

Brian just pointed it.

Absolutely astonishing and great job, Kevin. And finest pics, too!

Please tell me: how did you manage to replace those two white plastic bars at the strainer? Was Mike of help for you?

I've owned an identical KingBeat snare drum (same lugs and bagde) before, but replaced it only due to the non-fitting badge with my Star drumsets (round silver badges).

That 'King's stone' (btw: nice - and accidental? - pun vs. Kingstone!) snare is a beauty. I LOVE that rare badge and wrap! Whenever you want to part with it let me know ...

That badge is my fav badge now. Really. Second place goes to one at a bass drum that Osakabop owns, also with lions, but I couldn't find the link again. Eric: you know what I mean?! (I know you still have other probs now .........)

Ralf

(Edit: The badge (my 2nd choice) is from a 'Muraiyama' bass drum.)

Hey all... first post here.

Just wanted to jump in with the Star/RoyalStar snare appreciation. I have one of those 10-luggers with a heavy COS shell that I absolutely love. Here she is...

Also own a matching-badge RoyalStar kit in funky red satin flame. Maybe I'll throw some pictures up of it as well.

One of my favorite snares of all time happens to be a round badge Star snare (light 8-lug). There is some mojo in this one that I've not heard anywhere else.

Glad to be here and hope to contribute more.

Cheers,

Ryan

You're right Ryan! I have the same round badge snare which I use to play. When tuned and using the right heads, this old drum does have mojo! I'm also lucky enough to have the original stand!

Here's the rest of the RoyalStar kit that I mentioned in my previous post.

And just for grins, here's a link to my band's reverbnation page. If you listen to the song Arizona Snow, I'm using these red satin RoyalStars and that round badge Star snare. I think the drums sound pretty darn good for a $250 investment. :)

Great song, Ryan!

These Star drumsets are sound-wise still so much underrated.

Although I think there should be much more studio takes with Star drumsets (also from the early 70s), this is the first one I 'officially' hear.:D
