Vintage Pearl Fiberglass drums

Loading...

I picked up this nice MIJ drumkit a few weeks ago not knowing that the shells were 100% fiberglass. The previous owner had painted the interior of the shells white. When I got them the interior paint was scratched all over and didn't look too good. I then proceeded to remove the paint and that's when I realized that the shells aren't wood......they are fiberglass 100%. The drums don't have badges but looking at old Pearl catalogues, I noticed that some of their early models were in fact Fiberglass. Also, I noticed that the catalogue Pearl lugs are similar to the ones on my kit. The floor tom leg mounts are Pearl. My question is.....Are these in fact Pearl? Did any other Japanese drum company manufacture Fiberglass shells?

By the way, these drums are solid and sound Great !!!!

I'm sure these are fiberglass......I've seen tons of MIJ wood drums made of lauan, these are definitely not wood. My question was / is: Was Pearl the only Japanese drum maker that produced fiberglass shells or did Tama also produce them?

Tama Fibrestar drums. They were the 9200 Series and made with "black fibre - the strongest there is", according to their copy.

Pearl did make fiberglass drums, and your drums are some of them. The Pearl label on the floor tom mounts (and the fact that the shells are fiberglass) prove that. They are great sounding drums. In fact Steve Gadd recorded several of his great 70s recordings on Pearl Fiberglass drums, although they were later models with the later lug shape.

+1 on the Tama Fibrestar kit.Last time i heard one of those kits they sounded really good.Comparable to 60's 3 ply Ludwigs but much louder and more projection, but still warm and woody.Nice find.

Star did make a very few, and the only way we can know is to look at the lugs and other metal hardware to make a definite determination. From the pix you have posted, it is really hard to see what they look like. Pearl and Star/TAMA lugs of this era are very different and distinct. Can we get some close ups of the lugs? They almost look like the Pearl President lugs, but the coloration of the wrap makes it hard to see the actual design.

Nice score, regardless!

EDIT: Now that I look a little closer I can see the Pearl logo inscription on the leg brackets, so looks like they are indeed Pearl.

That's what I thought.

I also had several MIJ template drums which had the same Pearl Logo floor tom leg mounts, just wondering if Pearl also made template drums in Fiberglass or they just produced them under the "Pearl" name only.
