Remo Black Dots

Loading...

Remo Black Dot heads seemd to be all the rage years ago...what happened?

I've tried them on snares - "hot and cold" is the only thing that comes to mind.

Anyone ever try them on their 70's Rogers toms? Thinking about switching out my coated Ambassadors on my 9/72's for something else.

I really like coated dot for a good fatback snare sound...

-64 Ludwig Black Oyster Classic kit 22,13,16
-65 Leedy BDP 22,13,16
-65 Ludwig WMP Clubdate 20,12,14
-66 Ludwig Red sparkle Downbeat
-60's Gretsch RB Green Glass 22,13,16
Lots of cymbals, snares and orphans, old and newish

Exactly how are black dots "controlled"? Seems they'd offer the exact opposite type of control as say, a Powerstroke. With nothing around the perimeter of the head I'd assume it to be bright, with shorter sustain than a comparable Ambassador. More attack because of the dot... less low end too.

Am I wrong?

Edit: the tone chart on Remo's website is useless. It indicates that a CS and a Powerstroke sound the same!

Current gigging set:
Recent Ludwig Accent 13/16/18/26, (in Silver Sparkle), "updated" 70's Acrolite with cast batter hoop and Trick strainer/butt

Cymbals:
Zildjian K Custom Ride, Dream (Bliss and Contact) crashes and hats, and a Sabian Swish/China.

Other stuff:
60's Ludwig Champagne Sparkle "Traveler's Club Date", under construction. Click Here
70's Acrolite (under RE-construction)
Two 1960's mahogany 32" Ludwig bass drums with Imperial lugs.

I remember being excited about replacing the original coated Slingerland "batter heads" with clear black dots on my 13-14-15-16-18-24 (concert toms) back in the day. Being 17, this was because my drums were about to look cooler.

Jeez! I remember that! You used to be able to order the "dots" on their own and stick them on whatever drumhead you were using! Probably not much demand for them on their own anymore.......

Whoa!!! Flashback! LoLoLoLo
