Vintage Zildjian? I Hope. Last viewed: 4 days ago

Loading...

Just picked this up today because I liked the way it sounded. Hopefully I lucked out and got a vintage. Any info would be greatly appreciated!

It is 22", weights 4.8 pounds on my bathroom scale, fairly thin. I can bend it easily with my hands and when I play it, it really gets moving. Sounds like an A and a little like a K, kind of weird. Thats why I got it.

Thanks!

Wow! How can you tell? Would it be considered an A or a K?

Thanks!

See the word Avedis written in the diestamp? An "A" is just a nickname for Avedis.

It it really weighs 4.8 lbs that is a nice weight. But bathroom scales...hmmmm. But if it is bendable that sound promising for a really nice sound. Enjoy.

Thanks for the input, and yeah, I know a bathroom scale is less then ideal! It is an expensive scale though and I tried setting it on it several times in different positions and came up with 4.8 every time.

Like I said, it sounds interesting. It will work with all my K's and newer K con's. It's a little trashy when riding (which I actually like for contrast). The bell is very good, and it sounds nice when crashed. I guess I did okay for spending $130.

For $130 I'd say you did good! Enjoy.

Disclaimer: Drumaholic (and others here) has a much better handle on prices for old Zildjians than I do. I spend all my time recording old Paiste prices. Too many cymbals, not enough time...

As Zenstat pointed out, Avedis Zildjian's are "A's". A. Zildjians have always be made in the US since the early part of the 20th century when part of the family moved from Turkey. K. Zildjians were made in Turkey until the late '70s or around 1980, I believe. The Avedis Zildjian company bought it out and moved production to North America. When people are refering to vintage 'K's' they usually mean those Zildjians made in Turkey.

Both A and K Zildjian changed the metal stamps a number of times over the years. Sometimes the changes were subtle, sometimes not so subtle. Drumaholic has devised a timeline for the manufacture of both A's and K's based on these stamps, the cymbal lathing and hammering characteristics, and other idiosyncracies such as hole size, bell shape, etc. That timeline is the standard for determining the age of cymbals from different periods. Your stamp is a typical '60s stamp. I hope this helps.

I would concur. I usually saw 20" A's from that perioid selling for $130 or so in shops. A 22" would go for more. Of course I haven't bought a '60's old A in a shop for over 2 years, and don't know the effect of the recession on current prices.

Excellent info, thanks! Where would I find this timeline you speak of?

On a side note, a student of mine played the cymbal the other day. It sounds absolutley fantastic! Any subtle overtones that I initialy didn't like disappeared with the overall sound of the set. I cannot wait to use it in a live situation where I am sure it will sound even better. The bell is especially nice, it is considerably bigger then my K-cons and is clearer.
