'63 Ludwig grommet dilema

Loading...

 I've aquired a 14" Ludwig BDP down beat floor tom. A previous owner removed the badge, destroying the back lip of the grommet (and chewing up the grommet hole, also). The badge has a nice, bronze patina, as does the remainder of the grommet. Do I: A) Glue in the remainder of the grommet W/ badge so it still looks legit from the outside? B) Use a new grommet that's all shiney and bright? Or C) Use the new grommet and polish the badge so that the grommet and badge look like they go together? Does anyone make an "aged" grommet, or can I age a new one with an acid or somthing? I've just polished the shell, and it looks new. This situation has hurt the value some, (I am just fixing it to sell it). What would YOU do?

I would experiment. I'd get several grommets and try various toxins on them, maybe even bury a few for a while. maybe theres some paint available that might match. Intresting experimment though........

You can heat the grommet with a torch to age it. Don't get it too hot or it will melt.

VM2 - Nice - Did you use salt and vinegar bath?

Attached is heat used on a Gretsch round badge...the only good thing with heat is it doesn't take too long. Oh for anyone reading this...you heat and age the grommet BEFORE you put it on the drum. :)

No, I didn't use the vinegar, salt bath, I don't like the results, I experimented with various methods, and have now found one that works for me.

So...... are you gonna share or keep it to yourself?

Its better to have people think you're an idiot, than to open your mouth and prove them wrong, unless you doubt yourself then speak away....
