Ludwig P-4066-2 Tone Control (muffler)

Loading...

The current production 'tone control' from Ludwig - does that have a 1" or 3/4" knob? Also, the Ludwig Parts pdf illustration shows it with the control above the small screw, but the photo's I've seen on 2112 and drumsonsale show it the other way around...?!?

Is this the wrong area to post this in? Should I have put it in the General Questions and Topics part?!

This section is fine I think. You might get more eyeball traffic in another section.

According to Rob Cook's The Ludwig Book the P-4066 mufflers were 3/4" in the early days (1950s) and when they returned (1968 I think) it was 1". Rob says that over the years the mounting screws were changed a lot. Sometimes over, sometimes under. Sometimes 1, sometimes 3. My 1969/70 kit has 1" knobs with a single mounting screw under the knob for the 12" tom and 14" floor tom.

Are you looking for one to match a particular vintage drum? You might want to ask around here and see who has an old one rather than getting a new one. You may even be able to find a few P-4044 parts if you need to get an old one going again.

Richard, I don't know where you sit on the "purist doing a restoration with all period correct parts" to "wants something to play" scale. New ones will work. But if you just need a new screw or bolt to fix one you might find a part (or find out the size and TPI you need) here and that might be cheaper than a new one.

The toms didn't have dampers since I've owned them (17 years), and I only recently noticed that there had been dampers on them at one point due to the holes. I would have been happy with new dampers, but checked with the Ludwig dealer and they're set the other way round to my holes. My holes have the large hole nearer the rim, so the knob would be above the other little screw. The Ludwig Replacement Parts catalogue shows it the other way around (i.e. like I need), but I'd seen photo's showing the opposite, so wanted to check before buying. I'm going to buy old ones instead to suit the holes in my toms. I have a damper on my snare with a 1" knob, so will go for the same size knob.
