What would cause this discoloration?

What would cause discoloration like this on an old Paiste 2002? Sorry I couldn't get the image to copy so I had to put the link below.

The protective lacquer was polished off, and so then the bronze developed a patina.

bigshawn,

Copy/save the piture file to your desktop, then upload as an attachment here (or you could copy and host at image service and display here).

The files will appear in the bounded "Attached Thumbnails" box below the body of your text.

If you want to kick it up a notch and display in the pics in the text then click on the thumbnail and the pic will display in a new window. Just copy the address/url and paste it in the body of the reply, select/highlight the newly pasted address and click the "Wrap CODE" icon #

[C O D E]image URL you just pasted[/C O D E]

(NOTE: It won't have the spaces between the letters in CODE like I put)

The change the bracketed letters from CODE to IMG like this

And you'll get that....

You can also use the "Insert Image" icon and it wrap and properly code the image for display (but you have to allow pop-ups).

That's a little easier than the first way but the first way may get you to understand the coding a bit better-er.

Drumaholic - when I saw it I was thinking that it might have had some kinda heat damage or something. I am used to patina that turns the whole cymbal a darker brownish color, but I've never seen it when it has a splotchy rainbow color like that. Is that typical of older Paiste 2002's or is it only because the lacquer was polished off? Does removing the lacquer effect the cymbal in a bad way or does it just let the cymbal patina like other cymbals? Would something like Wrights copper cream lighten that up?

Hoppy - thanks for the help on copying the picture and putting the picture in the post for me. It's like two lessons in one- drums and code!

bigshawn,

I was thinking the same thing about the splotchy's. My 2002's tended to tone more evenly except where there was oil deposition from handling/choking the cymbal.. I can see some of that in the pic but it wouldn't explain all of it. Who knows... maybe a beer or three spilled on it, but with no label still present it looks like it was polished heavily at one time or another; and I'm betting another heavy polshing session would bring it back to life. However, I would want to inspect in person to see if there was any chemical etching as a result of the neglect before I purchased.

This could be from groove juice that was left on too long; a friend of mine was cleaning a hi hat top with groove juice, then the phone rang and he left the groove juice on the cymbal for far too long and it resulted in similar stains to these ones.
