I just picked this up. I don't see many of these, but not really sure of its rarity.
It's in fair to OK shape. Any Tama experts want to weigh in? These are some pics from the drum store's website.

Hey Dan,Your snare is from the 80s to me somewhat common i see them from time to time priced anywere from 75.00-125.00...They are ok sounding drums for the way the shells are made 9 ply with rings.....Mikey
Tama made some weird snares and would make anything you asked. That being said, I have never seen that type of snare. That snare has the imperialstar zola coated interior. Tama never made that type of snare for production.
Its most likely a 14 inch Imperialstar tom cut down.

That was my first impression too, except:
--The lug holes being centered where they are. They aren't where they would be if it were a top and there are no extra holes there.
--The reinforcement rings top and bottom.
The only thing that I'm pretty sure of is that the throw and butt are from later on, though they are Tama.

Not hard to do if you know what you are doing. The zola coat can be reproduced and reinstalling the re-rings is minor surgery. I cut mine at 6" and only had one hole from the tom holder to fill that will be covered by the head/rim.
I am actually searching for lugs for a project just like this only mine is Midnight blue to match my Tamas....

They are in no catalog I have ever seen and I have most all of them from the 70's and 80's. All the catalogs are also online at tama.com. None of them show a zola coated snare. They show black snares but they are birch superstar shelled or artstar shelled snares.
Also, if you cut the tom in the middle which is what they probably did to keep the badge in the center, there would be no holes at all. So, making new holes in the correct positions would be easy. All they would have needed to to after that is make bearing edges which can be done relatively inexpensively. The rerings can be removed and reglued.
It is also entirely possible it is original. If so, then the shell is likely from the mid to late 70's when they used rerings. What is the serial # on the badge? I think that style throw off was first used in the very early 80's. They do not show it in the 78 catalog. The only black snare they show in any of the 70's catalogs is the fiberglass snare, but that does not use the zola coating.
