Is it typical to have the lugs offset on the tom and not the rest of the drums?

Its better to have people think you're an idiot, than to open your mouth and prove them wrong, unless you doubt yourself then speak away....

On Star drums from that period they did some weird stuff with lug locations. The small toms and the teardrop lugs got too close together so they had to off-set them so they would not touch or get too close for not so perfect production runs. Those teardrops are long. I also have a kit with the Sling Sound King copies that are off-set for aesthetics, apparently. They just look nice. The bass, however, is a PIA to deal with.

As usual, I believe that jonnistix is spot on in his wisdom and, in this instance, the reasons for the placement of lugs. My early seventies Stars also have such an alternating arrangement of lugs. On my toms, there is around an inch of clearance if the lugs were placed in the "across from each other" fashion. I believe that in my case, aesthetics did come into play as jonnistix mentions. Personally, I think that the arrangement simply looks pretty cool!

Just a drummer who loves all things about vintage drums! Nothing more, nothing less.

I like the look of the off-set lugs as well. But what always confused me is that, if you're going to off-set the tom lugs, why not do it all the way around the set? You end up with cool, different looking rack toms and then you see the floor tom and you're like, 'Hey, Floor Tom! What's you're problem? Get with the program!"

Or is that just me?

Regarding this set, looks like it's in great shape, but personally acrylic/Vistalites/whatever have never done anything for me whatsoever.

From backbeatkeeper

Is it typical to have the lugs offset on the tom and not the rest of the drums?

Hey BBK,One of the only made M.I.J. sets that i can think of,off the top of my head was Majestic they did all the lugs off-set on all the drums..Now on this the price is high i think more like the 500.00-650.00 would be a fair price..The funny thing is that i have a N.O.S tom mount for this set....Mikey
