c. 1971 Ludwig Rail Consolette Parts List?

Loading...

Hello!

I've just re-acquired my Ludwig (Super Classic I think, and the serial number on the bass drum is 1777607) kit after nine years band use (I was the vocalist, but my drum kit was being used) and am embarking on some much needed (understatement!) maintenance. I never really looked at the kit during that time and there were various bits of gaffa tape put into play on different parts as temporary solutions which ended up being semi-permanent (their permanence ending now).

I'm starting off by tackling the bass drum pedal and the tom mount consolette. The consolette is the worst off part of the kit, and was held on by three disparate looking fixings and a bit of gaffa. The hex nuts (longer one excluded) are very worn away and gaffa tape was employed there also. I've just laid all of the bits out on the sideboard and photographed it and it looks a lot worse in a photo than it does to the naked eye even. I'm not going to scrap it though, I'm going to clean it up.

Which brings me to the reason for my post. I've looked on the PDF on the Ludwig web site which has parts lists for many of their products new and old, but not this rail consolette. Various googling, and much lurking on this forum over the past few days similarly hasn't been definitive in informing me what parts I might be missing, or which parts of mine may be non original.

I have the two long fixing plates, but they have different fixing hole shapes. On other photo's I've seen round fixing plates like big washers also, but I don't have these. The fixings which hold the consolette on to the bass drum are all different, I don't know if any of them are original. I'll need to get two replacement hex nuts and a key (I've found some online sellers for those).

So I've taken a photo of my consolette and hopefully someone can detail what bits are missing or non original. I'd quite like to restore it to as near to how it should be as possible. Any tips on cleaning up the various bits would be appreciated. I have a can of spray foam heavy duty degreaser, WD40, 3in1 oil, and a tube of Autosol chrome/metal cleaner at my disposal at present.

More posts and photo's will be forthcoming as I work my way round the rest of the kit. I thought it better to separate them into specific threads to aid future forum searchers.

Many thanks!

Richard.

Hey Richard,After looking at you photo these are the parts that are missing or wrong..Iam starting at the top of the photo,on the top of the mount were the "L" arm goes into you are missing the eye-insert and nut that holds the "L" arm that mounts onto your mounted tom..All of the screws are wrong also washers..What you need are the 4 screws that mount the mount to the bass drum the 4 washers 4 nuts and 4 lock washers you also need the two screws that mount the rail mount to the "U" shape parts that you have...I have all of these parts that are 1970s Ludwig...The chrome looks good so i would say cleaning it up with the Autosol cleaner you have should do the job...just P/M me on the parts if you like...Mikey

Cheers for your reply Mikey. The eye insert is in there, but I do need a new hex nut for it, and also a new hex nut for the back of the toothed clamp part (would be good to know the proper names).

Do the two large screws to the right hand side look like the wrong ones? They don't have nuts, but I think I saw a photo elsewhere and there were nuts on those (the screws that mount the rail to the U-lugs).

Hi Richard, yes i do have new old stock of the hex nuts that you need for the two bolts.Yes the two screws to the right hand side are wrong, they are like a cup shape bolt that fits flat into the rail mount[from top] they screw into the "U-shape part thats mount on bass drum, also these bolts did not have nuts on them. Then the "U shape part bolts onto bass drum with 2 screws/bolts and one of the chrome rounded plates you have...Mikey

I've managed to clean up some of the bits of my consolette and it's looking a bit less diseased. :-)

One question I have. The rear circular 'toothed' part that's riveted on to the main stand post has a bit of play left/right/back/forward (the first photo's). Is this normal/good/bad/desirable/undesirable? If it's bad, is the rivet replaceable? It's not 'really' shaky, just a slight looseness.

Also, I've photographed a couple of the bolts to see if those are proper ones. One looks slightly bent, I take it it's meant to be poker straight?

You can tightin-up the rivet.First put the mount on top of your vice with some tape under the mount,In photo two you can take a small hammer and a round puch-[fit it into that side of the rivet]- and tap it with a hammer...This will make the mount piece tight...Now on to the bolt's the one on the bottom of photo is the right one looks to be 5/16 the other bolt with the nut in top of photo is a Wrong bolt....Mikey....P.S. check your email i replyed to it today...

Just been reassembling my kit, and am finding that when the rack tom is in place, the L arm is slipping in the consolette causing the drum to fall towards the snare. It's just not gripping the L arm, no matter how tight the wing nut is. Just wondering what would likely be the cause?

Saw elsewhere that the modern version of the eye bolt (part P-1632) now has teeth or ridges inside to help with gripping, so I'll give that a try.
