I figure this is a good place to put this. I'll use this thread to document the restoration, modification and final assembly of my new set.
A quick description: I recently decided I wanted a smaller set that would be easy to move around, provide great sound and be, of course, vintage! :) I was inspired when my brother gave me a wonderfully nice 1965 Ludwig Downbeat snare in Champagne Sparkle. I'd never given that finish a second thought until I saw it up close. It was most definitely love at first sight.
Needless to say, as much as I like the snare's dimensions (4"x14") I didn't care for the sizes of the actual Downbeat setup. Namely, the bass drum--I prefer a larger diameter. And the idea of a 14" floor tom just didn't sit well with me. I thought and thought about it, and decided I liked the idea of a 12" rack tom. I bought a matching 1966 12" Club Date in Champagne Sparkle from a member here (Thanks, Mountainhick! :) ) and that particular drum influenced the direction the kit would take. I decided right then and there that the floor tom and kick needed to be Club Date style. By that I mean, one center-mounted bow tie lug.
My current gigging setup uses a 13/16/18 configuration on the toms, and I discovered that the tuning interval between my floor toms sounded better if the 1st floor was actually a 15" drum. I knew I wanted to maintain the same 3" difference between the toms on this new set, so the decision to go with a 15" floor tom was an easy one.
I checked eBay... I settled on a 10"x15" marching snare. It looks to be more of a lower-end student model (bow tie lugs, less depth) but it has all the right appointments (white interior, mahogany/poplar/mahogany shell, holes for baseball bat mufflers, etc...). So I snagged the shell for $25 + shipping, and it arrived this week. It'll be rewrapped by Precision, and I'll have them redo the bottom bearing edge (re-cut it to remove the snare bed). It'll be larger in diameter than the 14"x14" floor tom, yet more compact because of the shallow depth of the shell... PERFECT! :)
Ok, so 12" and 15" on the toms... But what about the kick? I knew I wanted bigger, but bigger meant more space in the car, and went against the whole idea of "easy to move". Besides, do you know how hard it is to find a Club Date-style 26" bass drum?!?! It ain't easy...
So, I thought some more, and looked on eBay a LOT, and got a really cool idea. I saw some really cool, era-correct marching drums. There wasn't much to choose from, but the prices were reassuring. Then, it happened. I spotted a "Scotch" bass drum on the Bay. 8"x26" marching bass drum. Mahogany/poplar, raw interior (pre-white interior, I assume) with a missing badge. But, it had the right lugs.
I knew I'd found my drum. It would offer the diameter I wanted with a very compact depth. The tone should be deep, yet punchy. I won the auction tonight. :D It'll get re-wrapped along with the 15" tom by Precision.
Pics will be attached in the next post in this thread. As work progresses, the thread will be updated. This should be interesting, and hopefully will serve as a good example of how to recycle less desirable vintage drums.
