Hello, everyone!

Hello, everyone! I am new to this forum, and wanted to pass along greetings to everyone on here! I play a late '70's early '80's Sonor Phonics kit. I bought it 8 years ago, and have taken really great care of it. Im getting ready to tear it down for a good cleaning. Is there any advice anyone can offer for a "newbie"? Any answers I will be greatly appreciative for. Thanks everyone!

First welcome to the forum,If you have a phonic kit I am assuming it is a wrap, only use natural fiber cloth **** cotton shop towels, man made or blends will scratch the covering,If you have nicotine on them windex or an amonia based cleaner will cut and remove that, after I clean with a wet cloth to remove residue,I use novus two plastic cleaner for deep scratches,it is a mild abrasive, and either novus 1 or turtle wax auto polishing compound, and that will smooth out light marring and light scratches also, and is good for final buffing.I usually soak hardware in hot water and dishwashing soap, and go after any rust with a soft toothbrush, any stubborn rust with triple ooo steel wool, rinse and dry the hardware by hand and some things(the rods, screws, washers) with a fan blowing on it.I then apply turtle wax(the liquid in a green bottle) let it dry and buff it out with a cotton cloth. There are some other people on here who have brought kits back from past dead, they will be of great help, but for a good cleaning of a dirty but good condition kit this method works for me.I took apart and cleaned a sonor phonic for a friend and I have to tell you it came back beautifully, and those were so well built with such great tolerances that when I put them back together they went back together so easily and were tight and tough,no rattles no looseness except for a few rivets in a couple of the cymbal stands.Pretty good since they had been rented to Flock of seagulls for an American tour and had duct tape all over them and had been tossed around a good bit.

Thanks eames for your advice. I did a basic cleaning of dust and grime and just nasty stuff a few months ago when I reheaded the whole set. The wrap is definetly faded quite a bit, still, though. I was thinking about re-wrapping the whole kit, but I have been told by a number of people to not do that, because it would seriously lower the value of the "vintage-ness" of the kit. I will try all the ideas you have given me. thanks for your help and advice. As soon as im done with it, I guarantee that I will have pics up ASAP.

Hi!

Pleased to meet you.

Wow, 17 inchers... I haven't seen those in a while. A long while. A guy I knew had a foreign kit that had a 17 inch floor tom. I don't even remember what brand it was now. Good luck though, if anybody will have one, it will be found on the forum. Don't forget to include some pictures and how many tension rod holes it needs.
