Vintage howard snare drum ID help

Loading...

I've got maybe a 20's wooden snare. Vertical grain, phillips screws, blue pearl wrap. Only identifying mark is a "Howard" decal. Came in an old case with a "Lone-Star" snare stand. I'd sure appreciate some help! ndfay@zoomtown.com

I'm thinking it's much more likely to be an Asian import from the 60s or 70s than a 1920s era drum.

Tube lugs, and straight or single flange hoops with rim clips on the t-rods were much more the fashion in the twenties than cast lugs and triple flanged hoops as your Howard snare has. The vertical grain also points to the Asian imports or "Stencil" brands as they are referred to.

There are quite a few stencil experts on this forum, so I'll leave the rest to them.

I looked at our selection of stencil badges in the Drum Guide, and I don't see a Howard badge, so you might consider sending a good photo of your badge to the Webmaster so he can add it to the page.

Here's a link to it, so you can see what I mean..... Link

Yes Kevins, is right your drum is a M.I.J. late 1960's drum..If you check my posting under Non-U.S.A. drums under Howard snare drum you can read alittle about these drums..Your drum has the same lugs and strainer that you would fine on a Crown drum your drum was made by pearl for an inporter to the U.S. Cool drum i like the fisish...Mikey

Just read Mikey's post on the Howard drum and now this one.

That is the first wooden snare drum I had around '65/'66 and it was called a Howard. Mine was black wrap. Sometime later I got a Laboz set. Same snare strainer, but different lugs. I know the Laboz had Slingerland style hoops and it was my recollection the Howard did too. According to the picture in this thread, above, they may have been triple flanged and my memory is bad on that part.

The LaBoz looked like the attached photo but mine was blue sparkle.
