Hi - located a set of New Beats HH that the fella says are about 10 years old and the bottoms have small holes in them (I assume for air release.) Are cymbals this age comperable to the older ones I've been reading about? I believe what I've read about New Beats overall is that they're a good cymbal. What is their general value? thanks
Zildjian New Beats question
If there is 4 small holes symmetrically around just the outside of the bell about 1/2 in diameter, the bottom cymbal is a Quick Beat. If the hats are not cracked, chipped or dented. 100-150 is fair, but prices are all over on eBay..
thanks - I think he said there are 6 holes, each about the size of a pencil, and that they are in good shape. thanks for the info.
Six holes, "about the size of a pencil"... Maybe someone drilled the cymbal for rivets?
Like backbeatkeeper said, the going price for used New Beats, unaltered, in good shape is in the <$150 range. If holes were drilled by someone, that obviously can affect the cymbals' value.
thought we had a deal, but now I'm not getting a response, so, may be back to the shopping paths. I'll come across some.
Vintage Avedis high hats are so ubiquitous, you cannot help but trip over them. Try eBay, you'll have your pick and they seldom go for more than $150/set.
If you want light/Jazz sorta hats you are looking for a pair 800g or under per cymbal.
Multi-genre hats would be mediums at about 900g or so.
Heavier rock hats are 1000g or above.
(these are 14"-ers I am talking about...and those are just some general weights).
thanks for the tips and the guide on weights - helps me sort this kit out to what I want. was trying to shop as local as I can 'cause the shipping costs on some of these seems crazy - but - such as it is, I guess.
thanks

backbeatkeeper is absolutely correct. ringoone.
You can check out New Beats vs Quick Beats on the Zildjian web site. Oh, and I don't think anybody has mentioned that in addition to 4 holes (plus one in the middle :)) the bottom Quick Beat is flat (no bell). That makes it kind of easy to spot a Quick Beat from a New Beat which has had extra holes drilled in it. Both are plentiful and cheap. Quick Beats tend to be quite a bit heavier and higher pitched than New Beats...so you have to figure what type of music you want to play. And of course Sabian make equivalent hats and they don't get as much "price love" when they sell used. But as you say, postage could be a problem. You have to factor that in.
I've got a flexible system going by purchasing a pair of Dream Bliss hats (824g top and 865g bottom) and a 1960s A Zildjian bottom (1120g). That way you can either do the 1950s sloshy jazz thing or the New Beat thing. Of course, you can do the same thing by making that a genuine A Zildjian pair of light hats, but you have to find 1950s ones to get that light I believe.
Happy Hunting.
The hats with the small holes once held rivets. They were called Sizzle Hats. Several companies offered them.
