maybe some of you guys can help me out. i got a lead on some ufip cymbals. i wont be able to post pics cuz i seen the cymbals in a photograph and they are out of town from where i am. i know the basic, they are mid 70 to early 80 by the logo and they are from italy. the cymbals are 14 hh 16'' crash 18" crash and look's to be a 20 maybe 22' ride. Have any of you played on them. are they desirable do they hold any real value. any info would be great. Cuz i got to buy the piece of $h!t kit that comes with the cymbals.the drums are not even worth mentioning on this site thanks 2xs

As a rule the cymbals from that era of UFIP tended to be good. Sorta Avedis Zildjian-like...but not exactly. The same yet different...y'know ?

The question is...are they B20 alloy or B8's ?? If B20's and if in good shape, they retain some value well. 'Hats = $100-120, crashes $80-100, ride about $150-170.

If they are B8's (and Italian B8's weren't bad at all)...they wouldn't be worth much on the market, maybe around 60% of above values.......although they still might sound pretty good.

Jaye,

I think your prices are more in line for A.Zildjians, not older UFIP's.

I would say take off 25% of the prices you quoted.

Most 60's-70's UFIP's I see are way on the heavy side.......it took them a long time to realize people want thinner cymbals.

perhaps you should get the weight on the cymbals. those are all likely hand hammered and UFIP has had most of the heavyweights of modern Italian cymbalsmithing in house at one time or another so they could be very good.i have quite a few Italian hi-hat pairs---Tosco,UFIP, Zanki----mostly from the 60's , though and my experience is that the heavier weights come off more like the Paiste Signatures (silicon bronze), than Zildjians. in fact, i think the Italians were doing a lot of monkeying around with alloys and hardening/tempering. it's not so simple as either B8 or B20. i don't think those actually really exist aside from as formulas in a text book. some Italian cymbals are as good as it gets.------by the way . the kit , they come with. i've seen some pretty diverse stuff passing as vintage on this site so ----just what are they.? there are lots of people that might be interested in them.

I have owned and seen /played ufip b-8's from the 70's and while some were good the majority of them I did not think so.The Italian b-8s I have seen had a lot of Orange/red in the color. The B-20 can be terrific, think sweet old A Zil.The roto cast process started around 1977.Like Calfskin said on the paiste thing,I have a Ufip ride that the ping is very pretty and crystaline but the wash is much dirtier like a turkish style cymbal.Ufip in the late 70's early eighties did have Hand Hammered and Machine Hammered cymbals think A versus K Zil.In the U.S. Used Ufips usually go for at least 25 percent less than used A zils, sometimes a lot less.I have also heard that the Ufip hats from that period onward can be superb.

Well i finaly got to see the cymbals that i was interested in. when i got there it was not going to be my cup of tea. they were italian b-8's and just like eamesuser said lots of redish orange with the finish starting to flake . and they sounded no better than zildjian scimitar's .NO GO FOR ME.
