Fluffy Wool Bass Beater

Loading...

Hey gents,

I've been looking for a fluffy wool bass beater for a while now. Tried the Vater bomber without much luck, they fall apart... Willoughcraft makes one that looks great, but I can't seem to get ahold of anyone at their shop. Anyone got one laying around that they might be willing to part with? Vintage, new, whatever, just real wool and fluffy please. x-mas3

Thanks,

-Jon

Repercussions and Willoughcraft as well are (or were?) Cherie Willoughby's.

Does anyone know what's going on? The sites don't get updated and she doesn't seem to be on Ebay anymore.

Great beater, by the way. I own Cherie's lambswool over wood and I use it all the time.

Perfect for feathering and my weapon of choice while touring to make a rock bass drum with pinstripe heads useable for playing jazz (while traveling without an instrument) I don't leave the house without it.

Guys, I too had a Vater Bomber bomb out on me. I didn't know this was happening to others. They told me it was probably just one defective one from the factory. Worse part was the whole top came off and the shaft stabbed a hole in my ancient 28" calf head. Vater replaced the beater and gave me some sticks, and swag. As far as replacing the head, they basically told me I was SOL. So I taped her up, and it will have to do until I can get it re-skinned. I aim to get one of those Willough beaters now that their rep has surfaced. I'd be curious to know if anybody else got "Bombed!"...

Now y'all have got me scared. My Vater Bomber has served me well for 3 years but the thought of the shaft going thru my 26" calf head is terrifying. Let me know your opinion on the Repercussions beaters please.

Don't get scared yet. It may have really been a fluke. I'm also notoriously hard on equipment. This occurred after say 15 hours of collective use. Let's see if anyone else has lost their beater top before we blow our tops...

Here's the skinny on how I think it went down;

The shaft of the Bomber is threaded and attaches to the beater via a t-nut in the top under the fake wool fuzz. I think it may have come unthreaded from vibration, The shaft stabbed through the side of the beater and then into my Leedy calf. It was a stomach wrenching experience. I wish I had known about the Willoughcraft fuzzies. They look so much nicer and the price is unbeatable. Anyway, I will dissect the beater and post a photo.

On a side note, I patched my head with an X of clear packing tape and one piece of duct over that. I didn't bother turning the head because the striking surface is exactly on the radius. It has held with collectively 35 hours of use. The tape hasn't come loose from the hide at all. So it looks crappy but it works with very minimal effect to the sound.

Here's the guts to a Vater Bomber...

I lost the shaft in my studio.
