I love Mach lug kits. Alot of them came in rare wraps like Blue Silk and Gold Silk. Don Brewer from Grand Funk had a Red Silk Mach 4 kit. Also my all time favorite Mach Lug kit belonged to the Great Cozy Powell
Anyone else have a set of Ludwig Mach 5 's?
My father and I worked in a full-line music store in Rocky Mount, NC in the mid 1970's and we sold the Ludwig and Premier drum lines. My dad was a bass player and I play drums. I purchased a Mach 5 set in 1975. The finish is BOP. I still gig with them today. In the early to mid 70's the colleges and high schools were transitioning to the drum and bugle corp style of performance. Ludwig designed a high tension lug for their marching snare drums and then duplicated the lugs for other tuned marching toms and bass drums. Then, Ludwig created the four and five piece sets and called them Mach 4 and Mach 5 (a suppose a play on the concept of breaking the sound barrier). The lugs do add additional weight to the drums and probably do strengthen the shell design. I personally like the appearance. One of the reasons they were not that popular in the 70's was because of cost. The kit from the factory included a super-sensitive snare - which was out of the price range of many players. I also believe the standard hardware was the Atlas line. Also pretty expensive for many players. During this period, Ludwig was certainly still riding the "Ringo wave" in North Carolina, and many of the new kit buyers were teens or parents - so the lower prices were more popular. I don't believe I've ever seen a complete set for sale on ebay. You do see a tom every now and then. Hope this helps.
Hello:
My first thread.
I was collecting Vintage Lud's (prior to 75) but life has got in the way.
I picked up a set of machs about 4 years ago, a 14,15, an 18x18 (yikes) and a twenty four! I added a 12 and 13 and a 16. All are in piano black except for the 16 which is black panther. I was about to start to refurbish when I ran out of time. Anyone interested?

Welcome, onegrouter. You should send a PM to member RJDrums. He has the only Black Panther Mach5 set I've seen, and I believe he is missing a 16" matching floor tom.

Hello:
More on the Ludwig Mach lugs. They are not marching drum lugs. The small drum mach lugs are 5 1/2 inches long (longer than the 4 1/2 inch club date bass and floor tom legs) and the marching lugs are 8 inches. The lugs on the bass and floor toms are 10 inches long and are wide like the large classic lugs.
The lugs are also slightly arched such that you can see daylight between the lug and the shell. This may be due to the 3 ply shells expanding in the center when played, due to the torque applied by the head tightening, or they could be manufactured that way. I don't know as I don't have any new unused lugs for comparison. Anyone have any knowledge in this area.
Again, I have a 12, 13, 14 and 15 with the 5 1/2 inch lugs and a 16x16, an 18x18 and 14x24 all with 10 inch lugs. I didn't know that Ludwig made an 18x18 but here it is in all its glory.
Also, the 16x16 is black panther. I heard someone is looking for one.

i have a 13" 3 ply tom in white that i've been looking add drums to it. but i decided i really don't need another kit,so i'm selling it.
but i wish i could afford a early ludwig 3 ply in that old style white marine pearl. that's the only kit i've always kept my eyes peeled for.
a few years ago there were 2 different kits for sale on ebay in this config, and both were very clean and went for big bucks.
Check out Ebay.....somebody currently has a set of Mach 5's for sale, in real nice shape.
