Help! Can you identify this Lug?

Loading...

Hi All,

I am very new to the drumming world and have recently purchased a second hand 70's era kit (Garage sale). The wrap was removed (before purchase) and it has no idenification tags anywhere. The tom mount of the Bass drum is Ludwig. I have identified the Bass Drum Lugs as Slingerland Lugs and the floor tom has Rogers Lugs. It came with Zildjian cymbols. It has 2 hanging toms as well as the two on the Bass (forgive me if I get my terminology wrong. I am a baby to this).

My problem is that the 2 hanging toms have Lugs that I am unable to identify anywhere. I have searched the net until my eyes went square...Can anyone out there please identify and point me in the direction of obtaining a few replacement ones (a few are corroded and the thread has broken away)?

FYI It looks very similar to Rogers (except the centre spine does not go all the way to the bottom it is only on the top.

Hi and Welcome here,

To be exactly: these are very early Tama lugs - or they are from Star, the predecessor of Tama.

Star added exactly these lugs to their latest drums in the early 70s. After Star switched over to the name Tama in 1974, Tama still used these lugs for the next 2 - 3 years or so.

Search for forum member 'Mikey777' here: he should have them for you.

As your drumset seems to be a terrific mix of different shells, it may be that you are correct concerning your other drums. But most likely the other drums you mentioned are from cheaper (but similar looking) drum manufacturers, as:

'Hoshino' (not to be confounded with Star/ Tama, please!) for the floor tom: their lugs looked very much like Rogers' ones, and

'Star', again, also for the bass drum: they had other lugs as well, being named here commonly as 'Slingy style lugs', and being a close copy of Slingerland lugs.

Pics could surely tell us the truth about your drums ...

Thank you for the welcome and information you have provided. Strange that you have mentioned TAMA as the guy I bought the kit off has a 70's - 80's era (not sure exactly)TAMA kit also. I had the choice between the kit I got and the TAMA (which is still wrapped. Silver/Chrome wrap). All the shells on the kit I bought originally had a wood grain style of wrap covering them. The guy removed the wrap with the intention of having them painted in 2 pack paint. I don't know why I chose the unwrapped kit? The other kit has lugs with the three stripes. I still have the option of swapping for the other kit, but I feel I want to stick with this one (for some unknown reason).

As you requested I have added photos of the kit. I look forward to receiving your feedback. FYI: The inside of all the shells is black and the lugs have Japan on the inside of them.

I am only able to load 5 photos at a time.

There are a lot of drums. They are all the same inside of the shells (black) HWere the black is scratched it seems to be white. I am cofused as to why it would have different types of lugs when it had the same wrap on each drum originally (unless the lugs where changed at some time?)

I have noticed that the mounting brackets on the toms have been changed from the original positions as there is other holes marked to be filled.

I am sure that you guys/girls here will be able to help shed some light on the identification of this kit for me.

By the way; I do like the sound (especially the hanging toms)

Holy sh*t:

Swap over to the other TAMA drumset, as soon as you can !!!

This is a crap set - one of the sort, member 'jonnistix' will be glad to pick up for free only (!) to give it to poor kids with no money for buying a drumset.

Additional note: I guess the white surface below the black is the Zola coat, which late Star drums (and early Tama's) have had as genuine surface on the inside of the shells.

If you like the open sound of concert toms (= toms without a resonant head): you may take off the resos from Tama and you should have a similar sound.

The other kit has the skins on the bottom still. What would you estimate the other kit to be worth as he wanted $450 (Australian Dollars) for the other kit?

Everything with the other kit is TAMA all the stands, kick pedal, hi hat stand etc Except the Bass head is a Pearl (not sure why). The other kit doesn't have hanging toms or as many cymbals. And I will lose the zildjian cymbals in the swap. Still a better investment? I knew absolutely nothing about drums when I bought the kit (at all). I just wanted to be able to take the drum beats out of my head when I am writting a song and actually be able to put them to the song. The guy I bought them off is teaching me the basics of playing. Still don't know much but am learning ;-)

Sorry, but it is impossible with such a poor description to judge the value ...

Suddenly you tell us that also Zildjian cymbals are part of the Star-deal: that is important to know!

What type of cymbals?

Are there any marks (as e.g. the size as 16" and/ or 'ZBT' etc.) on the cymbals?

How many cymbals are included?

Can you make a better pic of the snare drum (especially the part of the strainer)?

Can you make pics of the TAMA set (all together and each one of each tom and the hardware and the cymbals)?

Unless the Tama set is in pristine condition, I'd say that 450 are far too much ... - But, again, pics would tell us more!

The HiHat is zildjian and one of the cymbals. I will take a picture off the HiHat tomorrow and post it (too late here now). The other cymbals where Foremost and KRUT special (I can't remember what the other one is) 2 are made in England one has dents all over it from the inside and has 4 holes drilled in it with split pins in it. Maybe I could sweet talk him into letting me keep the cymbals and still swap for the other kit.

The snare drum I have is a Maxwin. I have another Snare drum too (until I decide which one I want) which is made in Japan (from memory).
