I think the vintage mahoganies have got more balls than the DW Classics and at a 1/3 of the price. I'm only using single ply coated heads and the tone is rich, textured and deep, plenty of mids and lows; I haven't experimented with other heads apart from a vintage ambassador (which I like on the vintage snares, but thought flattened out the sound on the toms too much), but I imagine using clear heads/emperors would produce good results as well.
A comment from Justin at Keller: The Vintage Maple come out as approx. 3/16” of Poplar and about .081” of Maple. Combined with the 8 ply all-Maple rings, and they are about as close as one can get without finding a new old-stock shell. Poplar, a very underrated drum wood in my opinion.
Thanks for the info re Ludwig natural maple finish. I'll keep it in mind in making my decision.
