Ludwig & Ludwig, maple or mahogany?

Loading...

Hey guys...

I've been shopping around a lot for different vintage Ludwig & Ludwig drums, and I've noticed that some appear to have maple shells, while others appear to have mahogany shells.

Which shells were offered during which years back in the L&L days?

Current gigging set:
Recent Ludwig Accent 13/16/18/26, (in Silver Sparkle), "updated" 70's Acrolite with cast batter hoop and Trick strainer/butt

Cymbals:
Zildjian K Custom Ride, Dream (Bliss and Contact) crashes and hats, and a Sabian Swish/China.

Other stuff:
60's Ludwig Champagne Sparkle "Traveler's Club Date", under construction. Click Here
70's Acrolite (under RE-construction)
Two 1960's mahogany 32" Ludwig bass drums with Imperial lugs.

Well...from what I've found around these parts......MOST of the Conn era Ludwig & Ludwig were maple shells. The majority of the Mahogany shells were pre-Conn buyout (aka REAL Ludwig & Ludwig), with some exceptions of course. Certain models of marching drums would remain mahogany during the Conn era, but I'm sure that certain shell/finish configurations got mahogany shells as well.

Hmm... I wonder if this messes up my goal of having MAHOGANY L&L drums with Imperial lugs, and tunable reso heads.

Not necessarily...they are out there, just seems the maple is the more common shell type during that era.

Good to know... I'm looking at a couple of toms right now. One has a painted white shell interior, the other is clearly maple, not mahogany. They're matching, and both are supposedly from the same year. I'm sure I'd love them regardless, it's just that I really want to find a set of mahogany drums with either badly damaged wrap, or a natural finish to begin with.

My 32" bass drum looks so cool with the clear finish over the mahogany and the Imperial lugs. I'd love to have it all matching that finish. Like I said on my thread where I'm looking for lugs, if I have to use repro shells and original Imperial lugs to achieve it, I will. I'd just prefer not to.
