Need a 20" Old K Ride -- Help?

Loading...

Hi friends,

First post here, and hoping for some help. Title sort of says it all. This will be it -- my do anything/everything go-to ride cymbal. Mainly for jazz, but I'd like it to be versatile enough to allow me to squeak by in other genres. Have old K 13" hats, 16" crash, 18" crash/ride. This will complete the set, as it were. (Was previously using a 20" '70s-era A.)

Having a very hard time finding "the one." (That one's probably not for sale!) I find these mp3s through my little computer speakers mostly uninformative. I think I've eliminated some possibilities that way, but I can't pull a >$1000 trigger based on what I think I'm hearing. That said, here's a contender:

What do you folks think? Any suggestions for me???

P.S. If someone strongly believes that (given what I've already got) 20" is not what I should be after, please let me know...

Thanks a bunch!

Had a hard time finding "the one", thought I found it but started using it as a crash! Go figure.

I can't decide for you, but that sound file does not wow me.

Finding "the one", takes a lot of patience and time. Anyone with $ can buy an old K. But it's finding your gem that's the hard part. Keep at it.

Thanks for your thoughts. OK, I agree, I'll pass on that one. The more I listen, the more I say to myself, "eh, not that special..."

Has anyone ever dealt with Matt Bettis at www.rarevintagecymbals.com? For all I know, he's probably here somewhere(!) Anyway, he's got the following two 20" rides for sale:

http://www.rarevintagecymbals.com/sound/1962.mp3

http://www.rarevintagecymbals.com/sound/1976.mp3

Anyone want to comment on these? Or anything else on his website? I'm getting a little frustrated, honestly. (Understand that I've been at this for more than the two days my post has been up.) If I'm not going to find a ride cymbal by surfing the Internet (which I admit seems really lame), how am I going to do it? My other old Ks just sort of came into my life out of nowhere. And I'm finding it difficult to engineer another one of those episodes!

Listen, I totally get the point about how anyone with money can buy an old K. I guess anyone with enough money can buy just about anything. At the same time, there must be something in between the ride cymbal sent to me from heaven and a very good, serviceable example that sounds great and gets the job done. I'm trying to be realistic and so I'm looking for the latter. I can't wait my whole life for the former(!) Or maybe I can -- I just need something to tide me over while I'm waiting... Or do people see it differently???

As always, thanks much!

Took me about 3-4 years after I started seriously looking for a good deal on my dream old K ride.

Oh, Bettis's work is awesome! But of course it all depends on how you like each individual cymbal. I am pretty certain he is not a member here, but he is a mainstay at cymbalholic and posts at DFO.

Any thoughts on those two 20" Ks he has for sale? (Links in my post.) Would you suggest that I find something like a Bettis ride (at ~$400) and just be patient for my dream old K?

They are nice. They sound like intermediates to me. Good Elvin-ish vibe... if that's the niche you want.
